Cassie Kosiba has been an assistant at two Division I schools and at D-III WPI since leaving Carleton.

Carleton has named Cassie (Glasrud) Kosiba '03, currently Long Island University's top women's basketball assistant coach, as its new women's basketball coach.

Kosiba returns to her alma mater after serving the last four years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level, most recently spending two seasons with the Blackbirds, the women's basketball program at Long Island University's Brooklyn campus. She will be the seventh coach in Carleton women's basketball history, taking over the reins of the program from Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, who announced her retirement effective June 2010 after registering a 226-122 ledger in 13 seasons at the helm.

At Long Island, Kosiba serves as recruiting coordinator, compliance liaison, and academic advisor; she is also responsible for scouting, player development and supervising the other assistant coaches and the director of operations. She worked with the Blackbirds' shooting guards and forwards and oversaw the team's academic progress.

"We're extremely excited that Cassie has accepted our invitation to become Carleton's newest faculty member and head women's basketball coach," said Gerald Young, associate athletic director and chair of the physical education, athletics and recreation department. "Her wealth of basketball knowledge and success, combined with her demonstrated commitment to academic success, is a perfect fit for Carleton College."

Long Island went 9-20 in Kosiba's first season in Brooklyn, with eight losses by two points or less. The addition of her first recruiting class -- which was ranked in the nation's top 60 by Blue Chip Basketball Report -- helped the program to a 22-10 mark last season, tied for the second-highest win total in program history. The Blackbirds finished second in the league and advanced to the NEC championship game.

Prior to joining the LIU staff in July 2008, Kosiba had a two-year stint on the bench at Division I Manhattan. After leaving Carleton as an assistant coach, she spent three seasons as WPI's top basketball assistant. The recruits she attracted to WPI posted the school record for victories their final year. She was also tabbed interim head volleyball coach in 2006.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to come home to Carleton," said Kosiba. "I look forward to the challenge of restoring the winning tradition to the Carleton women's basketball program, as well as competing in the always-challenging Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference."

A 2003 graduate of Carleton with a bachelor's degree in gender studies, Kosiba enjoyed a successful basketball career, contributing to a 2000-01 team that went 22-5 and won the Knights' first conference championship. That squad also secured the program's initial trip to the Division III NCAA tournament.
