Lee McKinney won his 500th career collegiate game Saturday against Maryville (Mo.). He also won 287 games as a high school coach. |
The Fontbonne men's basketball team knocked off Maryville (Mo.) 90-81 on Saturday afternoon to earn Griffin coach Lee McKinney his 500th career collegiate victory. The victory improved the Griffins to 13-7 overall and 9-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
McKinney began coaching college basketball in 1978 when he took over as head coach at NAIA Missouri Baptist, where he went 188-126 and was named conference coach of the year twice.
After leaving Missouri Baptist, he started a brand-new program at Fontbonne and has led the Griffins to the NCAA Tournament three times, in 1996, 2007 and 2008. In his first trip to the NCAA Tournament, McKinney was in the midst of a vigorous battle with colon cancer. He underwent chemotherapy throughout the season, even days before leaving for the tournament. Fighting this disease with the same passion he has for basketball, McKinney earned his first of two victories over cancer.
