Hornets down first-year D-I team

More news about: Shenandoah

Houston Baptist's first year of provisional membership in NCAA Division I got a little bit rougher on Friday night as Shenandoah ended up on top after 13 lead changes in a 78-75 win.

Houston Baptist lists its record at 1-8, but that includes a narrow 67-62 home win against Trinity (Texas) which is an exhibition game under Division III rules.

Shenandoah took the final lead change with 2:01 remaining when senior Onyie Onunaku drained his third three-pointer of the contest to give the Hornets a 72-69 lead.

Onunaku's bucket, which also gave him a game-high 21 points, capped a 5-0 run that erased a 69-67 HBU lead at the 3:14 mark.

The Huskies answered Onunaku's basket with a Baron Sauls jumper 18 seconds later, but they would get no closer than one point the rest of the way.

Junior point guard Lenzie Adams hit all six of his free throws down the stretch, including two pairs in which HBU burned a timeout in between attempts, to seal the victory. Full story.

No. 11 Hope fell in its season opener, losing in overtime to Aquinas, an NAIA team playing its fifth game. Friday's men's scores and women's scores.
