No. 5 UPS upsets D-I

Zack McVey scored 19 points to lead seven scorers in double figures as Puget Sound defeated Division I UC Riverside 115-111 on Wednesday night for Division III's first upset of a Division I men's basketball program this season.

The No. 5 Loggers trailed by as many as 18 as well as 13 at the half before rallying to win, forcing 22 turnovers in the second half. Josh Walker, who finished with 14 points, rebounded a Highlanders miss in the closing seconds and hit two free throws to seal the victory. It's Division III's first win against a Division I team since Dec. 18, 2004, when Gettysburg beat Navy 75-69 despite missing its leading scorer at the time. Division III won two games against Division I opponents last season.

Chase Curtiss added 16 points and Taylor Marsh scored 15 for Puget Sound. The Loggers improve to 7-1 and next face No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan on Dec. 29.

Elsewhere on Wednesday night, UW-La Crosse improved to 9-2 and handed No. 23 St. Thomas its second loss. Lincoln played its fourth game in four days and edged Christopher Newport 114-112 in overtime. The Lions rallied from a 15-point deficit with 6:35 left to force the extra session. Wednesday night's men's and women's scores.

Tuesday night, No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan got a measure of vengeance for last March's playoff loss, defeating No. 14 Hanover 72-61. No. 24 Ohio Northern acquitted itself well at No. 3 Wittenberg but fell 65-54. The No. 6 Baldwin-Wallace women set up a date with No. 8 Scranton for Thursday, beating Bates 66-63.
