Pat Maloney led all scorers with 20 points, including 10-for-11
free-throw shooting, as Catholic defeated Division I Albany in the
Mohegan Sun Classic at Central Connecticut State. No Division III
team beat an NCAA Division I team in men's basketball last
season.
Catholic (1-1) rallied from a 51-46 deficit with 4:41 remaining in the game as senior guard Andy Rice hit a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 run which put the Cardinals up 56-51 with 32 seconds remaining. Albany (0-2) got to within 58-56 before a Maloney free throw with two seconds left iced the game.
"I'm happy for our team," Lonergan said, "because it's been harder to get a D-I game recently and to come so close last night it's very gratifying to finally defeat a team with full scholarships."
Lonergan interviewed for the head coaching job at Albany this past offseason but was bypassed.
