McMurry overcame an 18-point deficit in the second half to upset Division I Texas-Arlington 80-76 on Tuesday at Texas Hall. It was the Indians' first win against a Division I program since 1979, avenging a 96-77 loss to the Mavericks last year.
Texas-Arlington led 51-33 with 16:58 remaining in the game, before McMurry went on a 17-2 run to cut UTA's lead to 56-53 with just under 12 minutes to play. But the Mavericks pushed the lead back out to nine at the 5:12 mark before the Indians went on another run led by a trio of 3-pointers by Matadi Kikunga, Rusty Reedy and Sam Thomas to tie the game 72-72 with 2:55 left.
Alex Denson drained a pair of free throws to give McMurry its first lead of the game, but UTA answered with a pair from Jermaine Johnson. Denson then scored on a breakaway layup and Dustin Martin added an offensive tip-in to give the Indians a 78-74 lead with less than a minute to play and held on for the 80-76 win.
McMurry shot 59% in the second half and held UTA to 34% from the floor for the game.
