DUDLEY, Mass. (2/8/2025) – In the second of two remaining home games this season, the Nichols college women's basketball team were handed a 73-50 loss against Western New England University on Saturday afternoon inside the Nichols Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Bison slide to 12-9 (5-9 CNE) overall, while the Golden Bears improve to 20-1 (13-1 CNE) with the win.
Abrianna Vazquez was the lone Bison in double-figures Saturday, scoring 11 points with two assists, and two steals. Alyvia Smith and Angie Coletti each secured nine points apiece, with Coletti leading the team with five rebounds in the effort. Combined, the Bison were held to 17-of-68 (25.0%) shooting from the field, but scored 26 points off 29 WNE turnovers.
WNE opened the scoring in the first quarter to make it 5-0 Golden Bears, but Nichols quickly answered with a Vazquez layup and an Adison Whitty three-pointer to tie the score at 5-5 two minutes in. However, the remainder of the frame would be all WNE, as they took over the lead with a 10-0 run to make it 15-5, ultimately leading to a 24-10 lead through one.
Despite an improved Bison attack in the second quarter, the Golden Bears continued to capitalize on their own chances at the opposite end of the floor, resulting in a 16-point lead for the guests at halftime, 40-24.
A layup by Klein got the hosts back in action out of the break and front-loaded a 7-0 Bison run that cut the Golden Bear lead down to 13-points at 44-31. This didn't faze the guests, however, as WNE widened their lead up to 22 points with 2:30 remaining, giving them control of the score the rest of the way through.
The Golden Bears then outscored Nichols 18-13 in the final frame, nailing down the 73-50 win.
Next up, women's basketball hits the road for a mid-week matchup at Endicott College (16-5, 12-2 CNE), with game time slated for 5:30 PM at MacDonald Gymnasium.
