Ithaca, NY – Ithaca took advantage of turnovers by the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, netting 23 points off Golden Knights' miscues as the Bombers downed the Green and Gold 59-42 in Liberty League action Friday evening.
The Golden Knights saw their record drop to 5-9 overall and 1-6 in Liberty League play, while Ithaca moved to 6-7 and 5-1. Clarkson takes on Union College on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson had trouble with turnovers in the first half as Ithaca forced a number early on. However, the Golden Knights had the early advantage thanks to a 6-0 run that took less than a minute. A last second layup from Cassidy Dumont at the end of the first quarter gave the Knights an early one-point lead. Ithaca utilized a 7-0 run near the midway point of the second quarter, with five points coming from Annabella Yorio. Another score on the final possession of the period from Bella Doyle had the margin at three at the break.
The Knights came back to tie the score early in the third, but another 7-0 run from the Bombers (with five points again coming from Yorio) provided Ithaca some breathing room. Each team posted their highest scoring quarter so far in the third, as Ithaca found some shooting tough that eluded the team in the first half. Ithaca made just seven shots on 26 attempts in the opening half but was 6-for-13 in the third quarter.
Although Clarkson was still close at the start of the fourth when Raelin Burns made a layup on the opening possession of the period, putting the score at 40-35 in favor of the home team, Ithaca took over and pulled away over the next four minutes. A 10-0 run put the margin at the largest of the game, 50-35, after a jumper from Zoraida Icabalceta. Fallon Griffin halted the streak, but the momentum stayed on the side of the Bombers, as they had enough offense to cruise from that point on to claim the win.
Cassidy Dumont scored 12 points and had three steals for the Golden Knights, while Bella Doyle hit double figures with 10 points and Elizabeth Aiossa snagged eight rebounds. For Ithaca, Annabella Yorio contributed 17 points and eight rebounds, shooting 9-for-12 from the free throw line. Madison Gill produced 12 points and Anya Watkins had nine boards.
