MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry Women's Basketball team opened the New Year and SAA conference play with a huge win over foe Sewanee, 76-32.
Berry's defense was outstanding, setting a new low for the 2024-2025 year in points allowed by an opponent. Offensively Sylvia Kahoro (who now leads the Vikings in scoring for the season) and Karlee Armstrong led the front in scoring with 18 and 14, respectively while Elly Callihan posted a double double against the Tigers.
The first quarter started rough with a 4-0 lead in favor of the Tigers, which took three whole minutes to score. Berry finally opened up their scoring with a jumper from Jeryn Jarrett and the next seven minutes were back-and-forth. Sewanee took the first by one point with a 10-9 advantage after a nasty start.
However, the start did not phase the Vikings as they would go on to put up 67 points in the next thirty minutes of play, scoring 20+ in each period.
In the second, the Vikings began with an 8-0 run to take control and gain the momentum to rally the home crowd. Despite the Tigers efforts, Berry put up 9 second chance points and were a problem for their SAA opponent on the offensive boards, snatching 25 for the whole game and outrebounding Sewanee 61-36 (a new season high for Berry).
The offense stayed hot in the second half with a 12-point lead to kick it off (29-17). Consistently sparking energy for Berry was converting Sewanee turnovers to points. The Vikings totaled 20 points off of turnovers with 14 of those coming in the second half. The team continuously held the Tigers down, taming them with ease.
The lead continued to build as Sewanee could not find a field goal in the third until the 3:17 mark (which was their only field goal of the quarter) with the home team already up 20. In the final ten minutes of play multiple players saw the court as Berry slid into victory.
Both teams struggled the entire night from beyond the three-point line with percentages not eclipsing 15, but Berry stayed true and went in the paint for a solution while The University of the South blanked.
Berry improves to 11-3 on the season (still their best start in NCAA era) and take on Centre College this Sunday at 1:00 PM ET for more SAA play in The Cage.
