No. 15 BW Women's Basketball Takes Down Capital in Battle of OAC Unbeatens

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 15 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Capital University by a final score of 67-64 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW Leaders (10-1, 4-0 OAC)

  • Senior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) led the team with 15 points and added four rebounds
  • The senior frontcourt of All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) and Sadie Arend (Carey) finished with eight points and six points respectively
  • Sophomore guard Laura McCoy (Newton Falls/Garrettsville Garfield) tied a career-high with 12 points including 3-of-4 shooting from deep
  • Senior All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) finished with a statline of 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a career-high four blocks
  • Vaillant also led the team on the boards with 10 rebounds: her second straight 10-rebound game and her third of the season

Capital Leaders (9-2, 3-1 OAC)

  • Senior guard Bri O'Connor was the game's leading scorer with 28 points and had six steals
  • Junior forward Samaree Perkins led the team in rebounds with six
  • Senior guard Laney Murphy added 12 points for the Comets

1st Quarter (BW 19-17)

  • The Yellow Jackets owned the boards with nine rebounds to the Comets' three
  • The BW offense distributed the ball as seven different Yellow Jackets scored in the opening quarter

2nd Quarter (Capital 32-31)

  • The second quarter featured seven lead changes
  • Irwin scored five straight and Arend followed by scoring four straight to end the half for the Brown and Gold

3rd Quarter (Tied 49-49)

  • Capital scored 12 straight to take a 46-38 lead: their largest of the day
  • BW stormed back as Ressler sent the home fans into a frenzy by tying the game with an and-one layup to end the quarter 

· 4th Quarter (BW 67-64)

  • The Yellow Jackets started the half on a 14-4 run, but Capital was able to go on an 11-4 run of their own to end the game
  • A BW turnover in the final seconds gave the Comets one last chance to tie the game but the Brown and Gold defense was able to lock O'Connor down to seal the victory

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 8 as they host Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at 7 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
