Stormy Petrels Sweep Past Scots

Maryville Falls 67-50 Despite 19 Points from Haney

MARYVILLE — Oglethorpe started fast and then played steady basketball over the final three quarters to post a 67-50 decision against Maryville here Wednesday night.

Shooting was the difference, and the Scots could never find the range. Maryville finished at 27.1 percent from the field compared to 49.1 percent for the Stormy Petrels. MC turned the ball over just nine times and grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, but they converted those caroms into a mere 13 second-chance points in falling to 0-4 on the season.

Oglethorpe never trailed after scoring the game's first five points. It was 21-10 to the visitors after one quarter as Briley Elder already had scored 10 of her 13 points. Maryville pulled within 26-18 on Reagan Brown's pull-up jumper midway in the quarter, but Oglethorpe maintained the lead and went to the locker room in front 32-22.

Twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth, the Scots narrowed the margin to single digits. But eight was as close as MC could get, and Oglethorpe outscored the Scots in the second half 35-28.
