Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Mya Hartjes led all players with 23 points and senior forward Evie Miller added 13, both career-highs, to pace the Spartans to a 58-46 win on the road against the University of Mount Union on Tuesday night in Alliance, Ohio.
The win was the second straight for the Spartans who improved to 3-3 on the season. The Purple Raiders fell to 3-2 following the loss.
Hartjes notched a career-high point total for the second time in the last three games, shooting six-of-12 overall, four-of-six from behind the three-point line, and seven-of-eight from the charity stripe. She added five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Miller hit six-of-nine shots from the floor, including her only three-point attempt, and collected eight rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore guard Maya Roberts added eight points, eight rebounds, and two steals, while junior guard/forward Emily Plachta contributed eight rebounds with three assists and a steal.
After a tight-played first quarter that featured six lead changes and four ties and ended in a 14-12 Mount Union lead, CWRU pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Purple Raiders 20-6 during the period. Trailing 17-16 with 7:29 left in the half, the Spartans went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-17 lead after a layup by Miller with 5:53 on the clock. After a basket by Mount Union cut the lead to six, CWRU closed out the half on a 7-1 run to take a 12-point advantage into the break, 32-20.
CWRU maintained its lead throughout the second half, fending off two Mount Union runs. The Purple Raiders managed to cut the CWRU lead to six with 2:12 left in the third, but the Spartans used another 7-1 run over the final two minutes of the frame to take a 41-29 edge into the final period. Back-to-back threes by Hartjes to start the fourth period extended the Spartans' lead to a game-high 18 points, 47-29, with 9:02 to play, but a 10-2 stretch by the Purple Raiders made it a 10-point game again, 49-39, with 4:13 to go. However, Roberts responded with a three to put CWRU ahead by 13 points with 3:09 left and the Spartans were able to keep a double-digit lead the rest of the contest.
The Spartans shot above 40% for the second-straight game, making 21-of-52 attempts overall (40.4%) and eight-of-25 tries from behind the three-point line (32.0%).
