Gress Makes History in 86-56 Win at William Smith

GENEVA, NY – University of Rochester graduate guard/forward Abby Gress recorded the first triple-double in program history, tallying 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists, as the University of Rochester women's basketball turned in a dominant, 86-56, victory over the William Smith College Herons on Tuesday evening inside Bristol Gym.

Gress notched a career-high 11 assists, tied for the seventh-most in a single game in program history, finishing off the triple-double with her 10th assist of the night on Bridget Miller's made layup with 8:00 left in the fourth.

The graduate student got into double figures in scoring with a three-pointer at the 3:20 mark of the first, tallying 11 points in the first quarter, and pulled down her 10th rebound with an offensive rebound just past the six-minute mark of the third quarter.

Jojo Sulmasy broke the seal and got the scoring started for the Herons with a driving layup 33 seconds into the opening period, and on the ensuing possession, Gress answered with a three to put the 'Jackets on the board and give UR a lead it'd never relinquish.

After some back-and-forth play early on, Erin Lillis knocked down a three off Rylee Drahos' assist with 6:22 left in the first, jumpstarting a 16-0 run that extended a four-point, 10-6 UR lead to 23-6 over the next three-plus minutes. UR shot 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from deep over the 16-0 run, capped off by three-straight made triples from Gress and Grace Corelli.

And while William Smith would slow the run with a layup from Amelia McCulley just shy of the three-minute mark of the first, the 'Jackets added eight more points before the end of the first to take a 31-8 lead after one.

Rochester shot 52.5 percent from the field and 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from the three-point line in a tremendous opening period, holding the Herons to just 23.1 percent shooting and one bucket over the final six minutes of the quarter.

The Yellowjackets kept their hot shooting going into the second, doubling up William Smith, 14-7, over the first four-and-a-half minutes of the period. Lillis led UR with six points of the 4:26 stretch, as UR knocked down another three and shot 6-for-11 from the floor, forcing a pair of turnovers to extend their lead to 30, 45-15, with 5:34 left in the first half.

The Herons answered UR's run with one of their own, outscoring the 'Jackets, 17-5, over the next five minutes to make it an 18-point game on Miranda Martin's triple with 34 seconds left in the half before Jazzy Perez went 2-for-2 at the line to bring UR's lead back to 20, 52-32, headed into the locker room.

Rochester quickly stretched their lead out to 36 to start the third, with five points from Lillis highlighting an 8-2 to open the quarter. William Smith would once again respond, this time with a 10-0 run over the next 3:22, but Melis Alparslan's layup with 47 seconds left in the third snapped an 0-for-4 stretch for Rochester, and the 'Jackets would score again on Poulakidas' layup from Gress to take a 65-44 lead into the fourth.

Once again, UR started the quarter strong, extending its lead to its largest of the night, 82-49, on Peyton Jones' free throw to cap off an and-on opportunity with 4:40 to play.

With their game solidly in hand, Rochester opened the final frame on a 17-5 run, kicked off by Lillis' triple and finished off by Jones' three-point play, before coasting to a 30-point victory.

The 'Jackets shot 45.7 percent for the contest, knocking down 12 three-pointers and shooting 10-for-15 at the line, as they led for 98.0 percent of the game in a dominant, all-around performance.

UR held William Smith to just 36.7 percent shooting and 4-for-20 from distance, forcing 18 turnovers, which they turned into 23 points. The Yellowjackets also outrebounded the Herons, 45-32, scored 16 second-chance points, dished out 25 assists, and tallied 11 steals in the victory.

With the win, Rochester moves to 4-3 on the year, while the Herons remain winless at 0-4.

Lillis led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the field, while Gress notched her triple-double with 15 points, a team-high 12 rebounds and 11 assists. Poulakidas joined the two graduate students in double figures with 13 points, adding eight rebounds and three assists, while Drahos tallied seven points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.

14 different 'Jackets scored a bucket during the contest, while 15-of-16 grabbed at least one rebound, and all 16 that got into the contest took at least one shot.

Following the Thanksgiving Break, Rochester is back home for the final time this calendar year, hosting Ithaca College on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Louis Alexander Palestra.
