Capital uses comeback to rally past Women’s Basketball in OT

BEXLEY, Ohio (Nov. 13) – The Denison University women's basketball team was unable to sustain a double-digit second half lead and ultimately fell in overtime by an 84-77 score to host Capital University in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

Five Denison players scored in double figures. Abigail Westmeyer led the Big Red with a team-best 19 points. Westmeyer chipped in eight rebounds and five assists in the loss.

Following a slow start in which they trailed by double digits in the first quarter, Denison eventually led for much of the contest and seemingly looked like they were going to cruise to victory at one point in the second half.

A driving layup by Abby Cooch on Denison's first possession of the third quarter pushed the lead into double digits at 39-29. The Big Red stretched their lead to as many as 16 points during the frame. Midway through the third, Denison used six-straight points, extending the lead to 52-36 on a three-point field goal by Violet Mitchell. The Big Red closed the third quarter with a 60-46 lead when Mitchell connected on a jump shot with seven ticks remaining on the clock.

Things went sideways for Denison as fouls piled up in the fourth quarter and helped aid Capital's comeback effort. Denison committed 10 fouls in the final 10 minutes. Five of those fouls came in the first two minutes of the fourth, putting the Comets in the bonus for much of the duration of the final quarter.

Capital ripped off nine-straight points to start the fourth. A driving layup by Kya Jordan brought the Comets within five points at 60-55 at the 8:08 mark. Denison was quick to respond with seven-straight points to extend the lead back into double figures when Brooke Toigo knocked down a triple and Westmeyer and Bryana Woodard followed with layups. The spurt made it 67-55 in favor of Denison with 6:36 left. Capital made another run to further close the gap. The Comets scored nine of the next 10 points and cut the deficit to 68-64 with a pair of free throws.

A layup by Woodard pushed the lead back to seven points (72-65) with 2:23 to play. However, the Comets scored the next seven points and held Denison scoreless for the remainder of regulation. The Big Red was unable to get a shot off on the final possession and the game went to overtime.

Capital outscored Denison by a 12-5 margin in the overtime session. Denison couldn't find their stride offensively with only two made field goals over the final five minutes.

The Comets outscored the Big Red by a 38-17 margin over the final 15 minutes.

Joining Westmeyer in double figures was Cooch, who finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Mitchell added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. Toigo and Adelyn Moore tallied 11 points apiece to give Denison five double-digit scorers.

Bri O'Connor led all scorers with 27 points for Capital. Samaree Perkins put together a strong game with 24 points for the home team.

Capital took advantage of the free throw disparity. The Comets made 25-of-39 attempts at the line. The Big Red went to the line far less and converted 11-for-19 attempts at the charity stripe.

Denison held a 51-36 advantage in rebounding. The two teams combined for 43 turnovers in a tough physical game.

Up Next: Denison opens its home schedule when they host the Sara Lee Classic on Nov. 16-17. The Big Red will face Adrian College at 4 p.m. on Saturday. La Roche and Ferrum will face off at 6 p.m. in the second game of the day.
