Waynesburg edged in PAC opener at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. (November 20) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team took its first setback of the season with a 71-60 defeat at Grove City in the Yellow Jackets' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener on Wednesday evening.

Waynesburg falls to 4-1 on the season and 0-1 in PAC play. Grove City moves to 2-2, 1-0 PAC.

After chasing Grove City throughout the second half, the Jackets pulled within one point of the Wolverines three separate times in the fourth quarter, the final time being at 58-57 with 3:34 to play after a layup by Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom).

The Wolverines scored the next 11 points as they shot 3-for-5 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the foul line while the Jackets went 0-for-6 from the field and came up empty at the free throw line. Grove City established its first double-digit lead of the game in the minute of regulation during the game-deciding run.

Seven different players scored for Waynesburg as the score was tied four times in the opening 10 minutes, including at 17-17 to close the quarter after a Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) three-pointer.

Scoring was hard to come by in the second quarter as the two teams combined for just four points through the first six minutes of the period. Waynesburg scored seven-straight points and took a 24-21 lead on an Aubrey Burns (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) trey with 2:30 left in the half. Grove City sank three three-pointers in the final two minutes of the half to take a 32-28 lead into halftime.

The Wolverine lead extended to 41-33 early in the third quarter before a pair of Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) scored 11-straight Waynesburg points with three threes and a jumper to put Waynesburg back within one (45-44). Grove City led 51-46 early in the fourth before Burns made a three and the Jackets worked back to 53-52, 55-54 and 58-57 deficits before the Wolverines pulled away with their 11-0 spurt.

McFadden led the Jackets with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists. Friday followed with seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

Waynesburg shot 10-of-30 from three and made 23 field goals at 35.4 percent on the evening.

The Jackets travel to Geneva on Saturday.
