Freshman Anna Richards delivered a season-high 22 points for the Hope College women's basketball team during a 74-65 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday in a matchup of nationally ranked teams.
The Flying Dutch dropped to 2-1 overall following the Hope College-Calvin University Tournament finale at Calvin. Hope entered the game ranked ninth in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll and 12th in the D3hoops.com rankings.
Illinois Wesleyan remained unbeaten on the season at 2-0. The Titans were 10th in the D3hoops poll and 11th in the WBCA rankings.
Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic HS) shot 44% from the floor (8-18), including two 3-pointers, while sinking all four free-throw attempts. The 6-0 Richards also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Sophomore guard Chloe Brunsberg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian) chipped in nine points, all on 3-pointers.
Senior guard Olivia Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City) scored eight points.
Junior guard Lauren Leach (Angola, Indiana / Angola) and freshman center Leah Richards (DeWitt, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) added seven points apiece.
The Flying Dutch struggled on the floor, shooting 34.4% from the field (22-64), including 28.6% from 3-point range (8-28).
Two free throws from senior guard Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) gave Hope a 7-6 lead three minutes into the game. Illinois Wesleyan ripped off a 6-0 run and never trailed again.
An Anna Richards 3-pointer with 5:35 remaining in the fourth quarter cut the Flying Dutch deficit to 60-58, but Illinois Wesleyan extended the lead again with a 6-0 run fueled by free throws.
Four Titans finished in double figures, including leading scorer Kate Palmer with 20 points on 81.8% field-goal shooting (9-11).
Hope returns to action on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 22-23, by hosting a tournament that features Anderson University (Indiana), Carroll University (Wisconsin) and The University of Olivet.
