WAYNESBURG, Pa. (November 15) – Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) and Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) sank four free throws in the final 27 seconds of overtime to deliver the Waynesburg University women's basketball team to an 80-79 victory over Carlow in front of a raucous crowd in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Friday night.
Waynesburg remains unbeaten at 3-0, the Yellow Jackets' best start since the 2016-17 campaign. Carlow falls to 1-2.
With Waynesburg trailing 77-76 in the final minute of overtime, Friday was fouled with the Jackets in the bonus. She calmly converted her two foul shots for her 31st and 32nd points of the night to give the Jackets a 78-77 edge. The Celtics had a look at a go-ahead bucket in the final seconds but Henkins collected the rebound and made two free throws with four seconds to go.
The Jackets fouled Carlow's Sydney Carr while attempting a three-pointer with two seconds left. She made the first two shots before missing the mark on the third and Waynesburg collected the rebound to seal the ballgame.
Waynesburg led by as many as 15 points (37-22) in the first half before Carlow closed the gap to 39-31 by halftime. The Celtics outscored Waynesburg 20-7 in the third quarter and held a 51-46 advantage heading into the fourth.
Carlow's lead swelled to 11 (59-48) with seven minutes left in regulation. Three-pointers by Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) and Henkins brought the score to 62-56 with five minutes to go. Friday scored the game's next seven points and gave the Jackets a 63-62 edge with a three-point play with 1:54 left in regulation.
Friday scored Waynesburg's final 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer to take a 66-64 lead and a game-tying jumper with seven seconds left to knot the game at 70. Carlow had a look at winning in regulation but Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) blocked the game-winning attempt and a fadeaway at the buzzer missed the mark.
In overtime, Carlow led 76-72 after two minutes of play, but baskets by Friday and Liv Ammons (Wadestown, W. Va. / Clay-Battelle) tied the game at 76. Carlow went ahead by one before Friday and Henkins made late foul shots to propel the Jackets to the 80-79 final.
Friday finished with a career-high 32 points, along with five rebounds and two assists. McFadden had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Henkins had eight points and three steals. Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) added eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
The ballgame featured eight ties and eight lead changes. Waynesburg made 11 threes at 36.7 percent, the Jackets' third-straight game with at least nine made threes to open the season.
The Jackets host Wooster on Monday evening at 6 p.m.
