Vaughan, defense lead Brandeis women past UMass Boston, 50-37

BOSTON, Mass. – Brandeis University women's basketball junior center Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) stuffed the stat sheet tonight with 14 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Judges to a 50-37 non-conference road victory over UMass Boston.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Vaughan led Brandeis on both ends of the floor. She tied for game-high honors with 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line, and led the Judges with eight rebounds – four offensive.
  • Vaughan also blocked a career-high six shots, the most by a Brandeis player since Maria Jackson '16 in 2016. After setting a single-season record last year with 40 blocks, Vaughan has at least four in her first three games this year, averaging 4.67 per game.
  • Senior guard Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) also had 14 points, hitting 4-of-10 overall and 2-of-4 from deep, and grabbed seven rebounds, tying her career-high.
  • First-year forward Jessica Maina (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School) had eight points, while juniors Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) and Mollie Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) tied for team-high honors with three assists each.
  • Though the Judges shot just 26.5 percent from the field (13-49) and 19.2 percent from 3-point range (5-26), they held UMass Boston to 24.5 percent overall (14-55) and 0-of-7 from downtown.
  • UMB's Sibayla Jensen led the home team with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Tatiannah Fevry had nine points, four boards and five steals for the Beacons.
  • Brandeis led nearly the whole way in this one. After the Beacons went ahead, 4-2, on a Jensen lay-up with just over three minutes elapsed, Ohm hit from beyond the arc with 5:44 left to put Brandeis ahead for good.
  • The Judges held UMB to just one field goal the rest of the period, taking a 15-6 lead after one.
  • The hosts had their best period of the game in the third, outscoring Brandeis, 13-11, rallying after five early points by Maina put the Judges ahead 20-8.
  • Brandeis went without a field goal for a large portion of the second, but a late Vaughan lay-up gave the Judges a 26-19 lead at the break.
  • Despite hitting just one field goal in the third quarter, the Judges expanded their lead to 38-26 by hitting 9-of-12 from the free throw line and holding UMB to 3-of-14 from the floor. The visitors edged the Beacons, 12-11, in the fourth quarter for the final 13-point margin of victory.
  • The 37 points allowed by the Judges was their best defensive showing since 2016.
