Goucher Breaks Seven School Records in 131-54 Win

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College women's basketball team set seven school records, including most points scored in a game, as it cruised to a 131-54 non-conference victory over the University of Valley Forge Saturday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Goucher (1-0) jumped out to an 11-1 lead four minutes into the game following a Merci Turner three.
  • The Gophers led the Patriots (0-1) 29-12 after the opening quarter, going 7-11 from three and forcing 12 Valley Forge turnovers.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Goucher used a 19-1 run capped by a Brianna Johnson three-pointer to build a 55-21 lead at the midway point of the second.
  • The Gophers closed the half on a 13-0 run and a three by Zion McCoy in the final seconds of the half made it 72-29 at intermission after the Gophers put up 43 points in the frame.

THIRD QUARTER

  • The Gophers limited the Patriots to just 11 field goal attempts in the quarter, outscoring UVF 38-11.
  • A Darby Sherman three with 5:46 on the clock capped a 15-0 run and put the Gophers in front 91-34.
  • Goucher led 110-40 with 10 minutes remaining.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Goucher tied the school record for points in a game with 8:10 left as a basket by Leila Townsend made it 115-44.
  • A layup by Sherman with 6:29 to go made it 117-46 to break the program record.

NUMBERS AND NOTES

  • Goucher broke a total of seven school records.  The previous record for points in a game was 115 set in a 115-18 win over Lancaster Bible on January 28, 1991.
  • The 131 points in a game is also a Landmark Conference record, surpassing the 111 Juniata scored against Frostburg State in 2013.
  • The Gophers set records for points in a half (72) and in a quarter (43), as well as a record for points combined for both teams (185), with the previous mark of 183 coming against Marymount (Va.) in February of 1993.
  • Goucher attempted 115 field goals, breaking the previous mark of 103 set in that Lancaster Bible win.
  • The Gophers set records for three point field goals (17) and three point attempts (40) in a game.  The 17 made threes surpasses the 13 made against Wilkes last season, while the 40 attempts came against St. Mary's (Md.) in November, 2023.
  • The 17 made threes also ties a Landmark Conference record.
  • Goucher's 34 steals set a Landmark Conference record, eclipsing the 30 recorded by Drew against Alvernia in 2016.
  • Goucher's 77-point margin of victory was its largest since a 109-29 win over Lincoln (Pa.) in the 1993-94 season.
  • The Gophers placed six players in double figures, led by Lauryn Towns' 21 points on 9-12 shooting.  She also grabbed five rebounds.
  • Johnson went 5-5 behind the arc and finished with 16 points while recording four steals.
  • Turner was 7-14 from the field and registered 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
  • Meona Boykin notched 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.
  • 14 of the 15 players who played for Goucher reached the scoring column.
  • Goucher shot 45.2% overall and 42.5% behind the arc while limiting the Patriots to 34.7% shooting on the day.
  • The Gophers forced 54 UVF turnovers leading to 64 points off turnovers.
  • Goucher outrebounded Valley Forge 61-47.
  • The 131 points scored are the most in a Division III game since 2022-23, with current Goucher head coach Mike Ricks' Birmingham Southern team scoring 150 in a win over MUW on December 31, 2022.
  • Goucher won its season opener for the first time since 2019-20.

  • Goucher returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Penn State Berks for a 6 pm contest.
  • The Gophers return home next Friday, November 15, hosting Trinity Washington in the opening round of the Renie Amoss '93 Memorial Tip-Off Classic at 4 pm at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
