Geneva overpowers top-seeded W&J in PAC Tournament semifinals upset

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The fifth-seeded Geneva College Golden Tornadoes finished the game on a 23-8 run to stun the top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College Presidents by an 89-75 score in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

This was the second-straight year that the Presidents entered the PAC Tournament as the top seed but suffered a stunning defeat in the semifinals. W&J had swept Geneva by an average of 28 points in the two regular season meetings but none of that mattered Thursday evening.

Geneva shot 50 percent in the fourth quarter and made 13-of-13 free throw attempts to snap a 25-game losing streak head-to-head versus W&J. The visiting GT's scored 57 points over the final 20 minutes.

W&J started strong and led 26-15 after the first quarter. With the score knotted up at 11-11 at the 5:26 mark, the Presidents closed the quarter with a 15-4 run. Consecutive three-point plays by Katie Kovalchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) and Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) highlighted the run. A few minutes later, Jaden Wan () scored five-straight points, including a triple. Loutsion closed out the first quarter scoring with a layup to put the lead into double figures.
Geneva trimmed the deficit to as few as three points in the second quarter when Mia San Nicholas knocked down a triple at the 3:25 mark. The Red and Black responded with eight of the final 10 points in the half to take a 41-32 lead into halftime. Loutsion bookended the run with a pair of layups.

Geneva wasted little time closing the game in the third quarter. The GT's outscored the Presidents by a 13-4 margin over the first 4:49 of the second half. A three-point play by Bailee Fletcher evened the score at 45-45 at the 5:11 mark. After Geneva gained the lead on its next possession, Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) knocked down a trio of triples over the next 2:03 of game time. Cherry's three at the 2:08 mark of the third helped W&J take a 54-51 lead. The teams continued to trade scores before a San Nicholas three-pointer evened the score at 58-58 going to the fourth.

The visitors opened the fourth with seven-straight points to take a 65-58 advantage in less than three minutes of game time. W&J delivered a counter punch, as the team answered with a 10-2 run of its own. Loutsion accounted for five points while Cherry knocked down a triple. Loution's layup at the 4:32 mark gave W&J a 68-67 lead. However, the Golden Tornadoes would respond in a big way to take control of the game for good. Geneva scored 16-straight points over the next three minutes to take a commanding 83-70 advantage. Seven points during the run came at the free throw line. The GT's led by double digits the rest of the way.

Cherry turned in a strong performance despite the loss. The junior point guard finished with a team-high 20 points which included a 5-of-10 effort from three-point range. Cherry added four rebounds, three assists, three steals and committed just one turnover.
Loutsion poured in 19 points and added three steals. Bezjak finished with 12 points and five assists while Wan recorded 11 points and five rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench.

Taylor Milroy dropped a game-high 24 points and was backed by a 23-point, 12-rebound effort from San Nicolas. Geneva out-rebounded W&J by a 49-39 margin.

Geneva advances to the PAC Tournament Championship game for the first time where they will face second-seeded Chatham University. Both teams will be in search of their first conference title on Saturday.
