The #15 Millikin women's basketball team defeated Elmhurst University 98-74 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois on February 20 to advance to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament Semifinals.
Millikin, the number three seed, will face the second seed #19 Carroll University on Thursday, February 22 at 5 p.m. at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois.
Millikin improved to 22-4 on the season in a game the Big Blue controlled from the start. Millikin outscored Elmhurst 29-8 in the first quarter to take control of the game. Millikin shot 60 percent (12-20) in the first quarter including going 4-6 from three-point range. The Big Blue led 47-24 at halftime and had its biggest lead of the game at 37 points early in the fourth quarter.
Millikin got strong games from its three All-Conference performers with First Team Selections Elyce Knudsen and Sophie Darden each scoring 19 points. Knudsen, the CCIW's Lori Kerans Student-Athlete of the Year, had six rebounds. Darden added eight boards. All-Conference Second Team selection senior Bailey Coffman had 18 points and two assists. Coffman drew 10 fouls in the game. Emily White had 10 points off the Millikin bench. Anna Blank and Diavian Menhundrew each had eight points.
Shanyce Makuel led the Bluejays with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Payton Schmidt added 13 points and seven rebounds for Elmhurst.
Millikin shot 53 percent (28-53) from the field and went 7-16 (44 percent) from three-point range. Millikin went 35-47 from the free throw line. Elmhurst shot 32 percent (28-88) from the field and went 1-25 from three-point range. Millikin won the rebounding battle 50-47.
Elmhurst ends its season at 12-14.
