Fourth quarter flurry helps W&J rally past Saint Vincent for 12th straight win

LATROBE, Pa. – Sparked by double-digit scoring efforts by Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Jaden Wan(Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock) both reached double figures as the W&J women's basketball team roared back in the second half to secure a 60-52 road win over Saint Vincent College Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The win was the 12th straight for the Presidents. W&J improves to 21-2 overall and 17-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. A third-straight loss drops Saint Vincent to 11-12 overall and 9-9 in conference.

Loutsion finished with a team-high 15 points. Loutsion was an efficient 4-of-7 from the field, 2-4 from three-point range and made all five free throw attempts.

Wan scored all 10 of her points over the final 10:36 of game time. Trailing by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, the Presidents finished the quarter with seven-straight points. Wan buried a triple with just 36 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 38-36 after three.

That run spilled over into the fourth quarter as W&J. Following a layup by Saint Vincent on its first possession of the frame, W&J ripped off six-straight points to retake the lead since the second quarter. A driving layup by Wan tied the score at 40 at the 8:27 mark. W&J took the lead moments later when Wan and Loutsion buried back-to-back three-pointers to give the visitors a 48-42 lead with 5:44 to play. The Presidents led by multiple scores the rest of the way. A driving layup by Wan made the lead 52-44 at the 3:57 mark. The Presidents made all six free throw attempts down the closing stretch to secure the season sweep of the Bearcats.

The two teams battled through a rugged defensive opening first 10 minutes of play. The two teams combined to make just nine field goals on 30 attempts. The opening 10 minutes featured four lead changes and two ties. Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area) pushed the W&J lead to 13-9 after a quarter after knocking down a wide open three from the top of the arc.

Saint Vincent's defense locked down which allowed them to outscore W&J by a 19-9 score in the second quarter. Back-to-back triples pushed the Bearcats into a 15-13 lead at the 7:45 mark. Saint Vincent continued to lead until an old-fashioned three-point play by Loutsion with 4:27 remaining in the half put the score at 18-18. SVC countered with a three-point possession, using a free throw split, offensive rebound, and jumper to push ahead by a 21-18 at the 3:29 mark.

A few minutes later, a layup by Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) drew W&J within two at 24-22 with just 1:53 to go in the half. The Presidents had a chance to draw even or take the lead in the final minute. However, a turnover led to a fastbreak layup by the Bearcats with 31 seconds left. Opting not to hold for the final shot, the Presidents saw the Bearcats score again as a jumper just before the buzzer gave Saint Vincent a 28-22 lead at the break.

Saint Vincent extended its lead too 38-29 with a jumper at the 5:44 mark. W&J righted the ship and closed the remainder of the quarter with seven-straight points. The Bearcats missed their final eight field goal attempts of the quarter. Kovalchick opened the run with a jumper at the 3:30 mark. Wan knocked down a clutch three with 36 seconds left in the quarter to bring W&J within two at 38-36.

The back-and-forth affair was reflected on the stat sheet. Saint Vincent held a 39-38 advantage in rebounding. The Bearcats made one more field goal (21-20) than the Presidents. Advantages came for the Presidents in bench scoring (21-11) and free throw shooting. W&J was a perfect 13-of-13 at the line while SVC made just six-of-12 attempts.

W&J limited Saint Vincent's leading scorer, Emily Cavacini, to two points as the senior made just 1-of-12 field goal attempts. Cavacini scored 25 points against the Presidents in their meeting earlier this season. Madison Weber posted a game-high 17 points to lead the Bearcats.
