Five Presidents score in double figures as W&J secures win No. 20

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Five players scored in double figures as the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team blew by Geneva College in a 91-71 home win Wednesday evening in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium to complete a regular season sweep of the Golden Tornadoes.
 
The Presidents picked up their 11th straight win to improve to 20-2 overall. The victory moved the Presidents to 16-1 in conference play. This marks the 15th time that head coach Jina DeRubbo has reached the 20-win mark during her 20-year tenure at W&J.
 
Geneva, who entered the game winners of two straight contests, falls to 10-8 in the conference and 11-12 overall.
 
Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was the difference in the win against Geneva this evening as she scored a career-high 23 points to push the Presidents past the visiting Golden Tornadoes. Loutsion, the reigning PAC Player of the Week, drained 10-of-14 field goal attempts including 3-of-4 three-point attempts. Loutsion also added three assists and two rebounds on the offensive end. Defensively, Loutsion also starred with a career-high five blocks to aid the Presidents' efforts.
 
W&J made 38-of-85 field goal attempts (44.7 percent) and drained five three-pointers in the victory and commanded double-digit lead during each of the four quarters of play. W&J dished out 24 assists and pulled down a season-high 62 rebounds. The Presidents held a major 62-43 advantage on the GT's on the boards. 
 
The Presidents would score the first 11 points of the matchup uncontested. Geneva would make good on a singular free throw to end the run for the Red & Black, but W&J would retain their already rolling momentum and lead by a 27-13 margin.  
 
The first 13 points for the Presidents in the second quarter would come from a combination of Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) with eight and Loutsion with five to set the score at 40-22 at the 5:07 mark.
 
Kiyanna Dowling (York, Pa. York Suburban), Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana), and Ally Fisher (New Kensington, Pa. / Burrell) would score the final points of the first half for the Presidents.
 
W&J led by at least 15 points for the entire third quarter. A fastbreak jumper by Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) made the score 57-36 with 5:32 to play in the third. The lead reached 28 points by the end of the third. Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) drained a three-pointer and Loutsion connected on back-to-back buckets. A jumper by Jacey Mullen (New Springfield, Ohio / Springfield Local) made the score 73-48 in favor of the Presidents heading to the fourth.
 
The Presidents were outscored in the fourth quarter but the damage was done. A pair of baskets by Marina Grado (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) made it 87-61 at the 3:31 mark. Haven Briggs (McKeesport, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) put a cap on W&J's win with the final points of the night.
 
Joining Loutsion in double figures were four other Presidents. Dryburgh posted a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Berardelli(Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kovalchick tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds to give W&J a trio of players with double-doubles. Bezjak tacked on 10 points in the victory.
 
Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) led W&J with five assists. Loutsion's five blocks were part of a 14 block night for the Red and Black.
 
The Presidents will return to action next on the road at Saint Vincent on Saturday, February 10. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. in Latrobe, Pa.
