Nor'easters dominate middle periods in 80-61 win at Curry

MILTON, Mass. -- Down by 10 early in the 2nd quarter, the University of New England orchestrated a 31-point turnaround over the next 16 minutes on the way to an 80-61 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory over Curry College on Tuesday evening (Feb. 6) at Katz Gymnasium.

Winners of five in-a-row and 10-of-12 since turning the calendar to 2024, the Nor'easters (16-6, 11-3 CCC) return home this weekend for a key battle with Roger Williams University (10-3 CCC).

UNE had five players score in double figures, led by Kaylee Beyor and Jordyn Franzen with 18 apiece. Beyor went 9-for-10 from the floor to join the top 10 single-game performances for field goal accuracy in the last 35-plus years of the program.

With a three-pointer shortly after halftime, Franzen became the 27th UNE or Westbrook College player (24/3) to reach the 1,000-point plateau for a career, doing so in just 66 contests with the 8th most-efficient points per game average of those achieving the milestone. In the match, Franzen also posted a team-high nine rebounds and equaled a personal-best with seven assists.

Sydney Jenisch tossed in 15 points off the bench, Faye Veilleux supported with 14 points and seven caroms, and Juliana Tracey hit 3-of-3 from downtown en route to 13 points. The visitors shot 50 percent from the field overall, and registered 36 points off of 25 Curry turnovers.

For the Colonels (7-15, 2-12 CCC), Olivia Gourdine totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Dunn added 15 points, and Kasey Reeves had 10.

Nine from Dunn during the initial frame helped Curry out to a 22-15 lead, and a quick triple out of the break had the cushion into double digits. However, on the backs of Beyor and Jenisch -- with a combined 19 in the period -- the Nor'easters rallied to take a four-point edge at the half (40-36).

Tracey had 10 of her points in the 3rd, including a layup at the 2:59 mark that made it 61-40. UNE connected on 11-of-17 field goals (64.7%) in the penultimate quarter to take control.
