Wolves Battle Tough at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y —- The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost on Saturday afternoon 65-49 in an Empire 8 Conference game at Hartwick College.

Keuka College (1-18, 0-11 Empire 8) was led by Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) and Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy). The duo each netted 13 points for the Wolves.

The two teams traded baskets early, but a 9-0 run for the Hawks put them ahead. Isabela Colon (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) drilled a three to stop the run. Hartwick would close the quarter with a ten-point lead, 20-10.

Keuka quickly cut into the lead as the Wolves scored the first five points of the second quarter. Caiden Crego (Lyons, N.Y. / Lyons) hit a jumper in the lane and Sydney Brown followed with a triple to make it 20-15. The Hawks responded, however, with eight straight to widen the lead. Another three by Brown snapped the run, but Hartwick closed with eight more in a row to lead 36-18 at the half.

The Wolves came out firing in the second half. Both Sydney Brown and Mary Cotter hit threes in the opening two minutes. Later, back-to-back threes by Cotter cut the margin to 10, 42-32. Sophia Babcock (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) got in on the action with a three of her own to take the lead down to single digits. Sydney Brown then cut it to six with a triple with 1:29 left in the frame. Hartwick closed with five unanswered points, but the Wolves had their best quarter of the game, outscoring the Hawks 22-15, but Hartwick remained ahead 51-40 going to the fourth.

The Keuka College defense stepped up to the challenge in the fourth quarter. The Wolves held Hartwick off the board for the first 6:46 of the quarter. Unfortunately, the Wolves were only able to get four points back during that span. Both teams started scoring more in the final minutes, but Hartwick had answers and converted from the free throw line as the Hawks defeated the Wolves 65-49.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves have just a few days to prepare for their next game. Keuka College will travel to Nazareth University this Tuesday for an Empire 8 game. The Golden Flyers defeated the Wolves in their first meeting a few weeks ago.
