BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team made history with their 61-30 win over McDaniel Thursday night. The victory was the Blue Jays' 16th straight dating back their November 14th win over Marymount, setting a record for the longest winning streak in program history.
Jadyn Murray poured in a career-high 15 points on 7-12 shooting in just 19 minutes to lead all scorers, with Michaela O'Neil (13) also cracking double figures for the sixth straight game. Macie Feldman and Greta Miller filled the stat sheet in the 31-point victory, with Feldman racking up six points, a game-high 10 boards and four assists while Miller added seven points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a whopping seven steals. The helpers were a career-best mark for the junior as were the thefts, with her seven steals serving as the most since Diarra Oden registered seven herself in the 2019-20 season.
As a team Hopkins dominated the turnover battle — the Jays forced 28 turnovers and committed just nine, leading to a lopsided 31-2 advantage in points off turnovers — and the paint where they outscored the Green Terror 44-10.
Thursday's opening quarter was the most tightly contested of the night, with neither side able to pull away. O'Neil and Feldman impressed in the frame, with O'Neil's layup with 43 seconds left on the clock giving Hopkins (17-1, 13-0 Centennial) its largest lead of the afternoon at four, but a bucket by McDaniel (10-8, 5-8 Centennial) as time expired sent the Jays into the break up just 13-11.
Hopkins' full-court pressure proved too much for the visitors in the second, as the Green Terror committed nine turnovers and were held to just seven points on 27% shooting. The Blue Jays used a pair of 5-0 runs to jump in front 25-16 before Murray, Layla Henderson, Miller and O'Neil combined for an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to give themselves a comfortable 33-18 lead at the half.
The third quarter belonged to Murray, who nearly outscored McDaniel herself in the frame — the junior dropped eight of her 15 points compared to just 10 for the Green Terror. Murray scored six of Hopkins' first 10 points to give the Jays their largest lead to that point at 43-22 before a pair of triples from McDaniel cut the lead to 17. After both teams went scoreless in the ensuing minute of action, Beth Corelli sank her lone 3-pointer of the night to put Hopkins up 48-28 with 10 minutes to go.
The Blue Jays' defense locked in once again in the fourth, allowing a season-low two points on just one made bucket while adding 13 themselves. A 7-0 run to open the quarter capped by a 3-pointer from Henderson put Hopkins up 27 to lay any final doubts to rest before McDaniel finally broke the run with their lone basket of the frame. In the final minute of regulation it was the Jays using a pretty up-and-under from Abby St. Onge and a give-and-go between St. Onge and Maya Johnson to secure the 61-30 win.
Hopkins will look to continue its record-breaking win streak Saturday, Jan. 27 when they take on Ursinus, with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
