Conn's Comeback Falls Short vs. #25 UMass Dartmouth

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Despite a late fourth-quarter charge, the Connecticut College women's basketball team suffered a 68-62 setback against No. 25 UMass Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference clash at Luce Field House.

The Camels, who faced an 18-point deficit with 7:15 remaining in the game, rallied back to within four behind a 19-5 stretch. However, Conn was forced to foul in the final minute, and the Corsairs wrapped up the win by going 5-for-6 from the line in the final moments.

UMass Dartmouth's Kaylin Zalewski led all scorers with 22 points and added six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Carly Whiteside and Amaris Mills each chipped in 10 points.

Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) paced the Camels with a season-high 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) came off the bench to add 11 points and shot 3-for-6 from three-point range. Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) tacked on nine points, seven boards and a career-high six blocks.

The Camels kept within striking distance in the first half, trailing by as many as eight before cutting the deficit to 28-24 by the break. Zalewski led all scorers with eight points at intermission while Thompson had six for the Camels.

The Corsairs outscored the Camels 20-11 in the third quarter to open up a 48-35 advantage heading into the fourth. Zalewski contributed nine points in the period as the visitors shot 54 percent from the floor.

After UMass Dartmouth bumped the margin to 18 in the fourth quarter, the Camels began to claw their way back behind a three-point play by Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.). Thompson added a pair of baskets and Burns drilled a three-pointer, and later Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the Camels to within 63-59 with 53 seconds to go.

Three free throws by Zalewski and two from Melanie DeMeo were all the Corsairs needed to sew up the win in the final minute. UMass Dartmouth improved to 15-2 overall with the victory.

Conn College (5-12 overall) will next play at Bowdoin College on Friday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m.
