York (Pa.) Downs Hood for 12th Win of the Year

YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team continued their strong regular season campaign as they earned their fifth MAC Commonwealth win of the year with a 70-61 victory over Hood on Saturday in York.
The Spartans had a big second quarter, outscoring the Blazers 24-16, to take a 41-27 lead at the break. They would cruise to the win from there.
York improves to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the Commonwealth. The Blazers, who came into the game on a two-game winning streak, fall to 3-12 overall and 2-4 in the league.
 
How It Happened
• The Blazers jumped on the Spartans early as they led 4-0 just over two minutes into the game. The Spartans steadied themselves and put together a 15-4 run to take 15-8 lead with 1:15 left in the opening quarter. The Blazers got a three pointer from Amari Faust and Taylor Brenneman hit a lay-up as the Spartans took a 17-11 lead after ten minutes of play.
• Taylor Burda opened the second quarter with a three pointer to fuel an 8-0 run as the Spartans pushed the lead to 14 at 25-11. Hood rebounded with six quick points before a Brooklyn Naylor lay-up kick started a 14-5 run that pushed the Spartan advantage to 39-22 with 2:05 remaining in the half. Naylor and Burda each had four points on the run. The Blazers scored five of the final seven points of the half as the Spartan lead was 14 (41-27) at the break.
• The Blazers scored six of the first nine points of the second half, trimming the Spartan lead to 11 but the Spartans answered with a 10-2 spurt to push the lead to 19 with 4:10 left in the third quarter. York scored six of the final 11 points of the third quarter as they led by 20 (60-40) after 30 minutes of play.
• Hood sliced into the Spartan lead to start the fourth as they hit York with a 12-3 run over the first 4:52 of the quarter, cutting the York lead to 11. Breana Grim went on a personal 5-0 run to push the lead back to 16 with 3:10 left in the game. The Blazers scored nine of the final 11 points of the game to make the contest cosmetically closer than it was for much of the afternoon as the Spartans came away with the nine-point win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 42.1% from the floor including 39.1% (9-for-23) from distance and 65% (13-for-20) from the free throw line … the Blazers shot 46.3% from the field including 30% (6-for-20) from three and 5-for-9 (55.6%) from the free throw line … the Spartans had a 35-32 margin on the glass as both teams had 10 second chance points … 12 of York's 35 rebounds were on the offensive end … the Spartans forced the Blazers into 23 turnovers while York had 21 in the win … the Spartans got 21 points off turnovers while Hood had 17 … the Spartans won the paint points 28-24 … both teams had eight fast break points … York spent 34:24 of the game with the lead … York's largest lead was 20 points late in the third quarter … Hood had 13 steals to nine for York.

The Spartans are now 15-2 all-time against the Blazers as York has won eight straight in the series … after going 1-for-17 from three in the Wednesday win over Albright, the Spartans made a season-high tying nine threes as they shot 39% from distance in the win … the Spartans snapped a four game streak of being out-rebounded as they bettered the Blazers on the boards by three caroms … for just the second time this season, the Spartans did not record a blocked shot … York has won three straight as they have bettered their win total from last year by two victories with eight games left in the regular season … the Spartans placed all five starters in double figures led by the tandem of Taylor Burda and Breana Grim as they each had 14 points … Burda added four rebounds, three assists and one steal in her 34 minutes of play … Grim had five assists, two rebounds, and three steals in 32 minutes of action … Alyssa Hocker chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds one assist and one steal for the Green and White … Brooklyn Naylor and Makenna Zimmerman each had 10 points … Naylor added a rebound and two assists while Zimmerman pulled in seven rebounds and had one steal for York … Taylor Brenneman chipped in with five points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal off the bench for the Green and White.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they head back out on the road to complete the first round of MAC Commonwealth play with a trip to Chester, PA to face Widener in a league contest. Tip time is set for 6:00 pm.
