Randolph-Macon Women's Hoops Uses Fourth Period Explosion to Move Past Bridgewater

How it Happened

  • Randolph-Macon only took the lead once in the first period, but kept the game within striking distance. Bridgewater went on an 8-2 run, after the game was tied at 4-4, Riley Corcoran capped off the run with a fast-break turnover by the Yellow Jackets. Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) made a lay-up with 30 seconds left to get the Lemon and Black within three at 14-11. Jay Garcia knocked down a shot with seconds left to give the Eagles a 16-11 lead after the first period. 
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored Bridgewater 8-4 in the first five minutes of the second period to pull within one at 20-19. Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) broke the ice for RMC from behind the arc with a three ball to highlight the start of the period. Park tied up the game at 21-21 with 2:17 left in the first half to give Randolph-Macon life. The Eagles answered with a quick five point jolt from Kayla Ford and My'la Green for a 26-21 lead for BC. Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) scored the final four points of the period to pull RMC within a point at 26-25 to go into halftime. 
  • Elkins knocked down two free throws to start the third period to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead (28-26) since they led 2-0 to open the game. Bridgewater took the lead back with two Abby Freeman free throws with 22 seconds left in the third period for a 35-33 lead. Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa) fought hard for an offensive rebound with seconds left, made a lay-up at the buzzer, sending Randolph-Macon into the fourth period with momentum with the game tied at 35-35. 
  • The Lemon and Black erupted on the offensive end in the final ten minutes, outscoring Bridgewater 23-11 in the period. Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) guided an 8-0 run to begin the period with back-to-back three pointers to mount a 43-35 lead RMC lead with 7:35 left. Ziegler also gave the Yellow Jackets its biggest lead of the game with another three ball with 3:07 left for a 53-40 lead. Randolph-Macon forced six turnovers by the Eagles in the period to help the explosive offense and for a 58-46 win.    

Inside the Numbers

  • Randolph-Macon shot 40.4% from the floor, as Bridgewater knocked down 36.2% of their shots.
  • RMC outrebounded the Eagles 37-to-29. The Yellow Jackets recorded 17 offensive rebounds, compared to the nine BC managed to mount. 
  • Elkins recorded her eighth double-double of the season and fourth straight. The sophomore recorded 16 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal.
  • Park ended the night with 13 points and five rebounds.
  • Smith scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds. The freshman also recorded a career-high in assists with seven. 
  • Ziegler shot 3-for-5 from behind the arc to total nine points.
