How it Happened
- The first period saw both teams lead numerous times in ten minutes. Ferrum scored the first bucket of the game on a lay-up by Kayla Cabiness. The Yellow Jackets answered with five straight points and were capped off by a Elkins lay-up plus the foul shot to take a 5-2 lead with 7:57 left. The Panthers answered with five straight points of their own to take back the lead 7-5, holding RMC scoreless for four minutes. Sam Smith knocked down two free throws with six seconds left to take the first period 11-9.
- In the second ten minutes, both teams had the same idea, playing good defense and forcing tough shots. Ferrum never led in the second period, the closest they got was cutting the deficit to one multiple times. Randolph-Macon did go on a quick 7-2 run in the middle of the period to grab its largest lead of the game of seven, with the score at 23-16 with 2:53 remaining. Cait Velez accounted for five of the seven points on the run, which included a three ball to give the Yellow Jackets a cushion. The Panthers scored the final five points of the period to cut the RMC lead to 23-21 at halftime.
- The third period saw two different runs by each team, as Ferrum outscored Randolph-Macon 11-10. The Lemon and Black began the period on a 8-0 run, where Elkins scored half of the points, as RMC took a 31-21 lead with 7:05 left. Ferrum did not lay down after that, going on an 11-2 run to finish the period. Taryn Blankenship kick-started the Panther offense with six points in the 11 point outburst, as the Yellow Jackets took a 33-32 lead into the final ten minutes.
- Blakenship kept up the offensive power for Ferrum giving them their first lead since the first period on a mid-range jumper at the 8:31 mark of the fourth for a 37-35 lead. Marisa Ziegler hit a three-pointer at the 6:03 mark to give RMC a 40-39 lead. Two free-throws by Trina Lewis tied up the game at 44-44 with 2:03 left for Ferrum. The moment of the game, happened on a five point outburst by the Yellow Jackets, that ended with a Smith fastbreak lay-up to give RMC a 49-44 lead with 28 seconds left. That moment propelled Randolph-Macon to a 51-49 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Randolph-Macon shot 36.7% from the floor, as Ferrum knocked down 33.3% of their shots.
- FC outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 41-to-30.
- Elkins recorded her seventh double-double of the season and third straight. The sophomore recorded 12 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and an assist.
- Park ended the evening as the leading scorer for the Yellow Jackets with 18 points. The junior also grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals.
- Smith finished a career-high in assists with six in the game. The freshman also scored nine points, three steals and two rebounds.
