PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's basketball team falls to Geneseo 67-58 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall. The Cardinals were led by first-year guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y. / Ward Melville) and Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y. / Albany) as they both led the team with 15 points. Greek added two assists to her double-figure performance while Walcott added six rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.
Other contributions for the Cardinals came from Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) who had nine points and Payton Couture (Redford, N.Y. / Saranac) and Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) who each had five. Couture also grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists. Bri Brousseau (Peru, N.Y. / Peru) led the team in rebounds with seven to go with her four points and Selma Deisz (Bekkestua, Norway / Nadderud VGS) dished out three assists to go along with three points and three rebounds.
For the Knights, Audrey Hintz led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds. Kiley Snow and Hannah Stockman were also in double figures with 13 and 12 respectively.
The Cardinals shot a solid 39.6% from the field while Geneseo only shot 35.1% from the field but 42.1% from three as they made 8 of 19 and the Cardinals 6 of 17 at 35.3% The Knights had the slight edge in rebounds at 38-37 and won the turnover battle 10-14. The Cardinals were balanced on offense as they dished out 13 assists compared to the Knights 11.
Plattsburgh falls to 6-7 overall (3-4 SUNYAC) and will be back in action next week on Friday, Jan. 19 as they travel to Oneonta for a 5:30 pm tip-off. Geneseo moves to 10-4 overall (5-2 SUNYAC) and will be back in action Tuesday, Jan. 23 as they host Buffalo State for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
The Knights scored the first points of the game on a Stockman three followed by six straight Cardinal points. Hintz stopped the run with a layup that made the score 6-5 Cardinals with less than six minutes to play. Both teams exchanged buckets that tied the game at 8 shortly after. The Cardinals went on a 7-0 run from the 4:05 mark until the 2:02 mark that made the score 15-8 Cardinals. The Cardinals closed the quarter with a jumper from Wilson and a three from Greek that made the score 20-11 at the end of the first.
Both teams exchanged buckets as Maggie McGrane made a jumper and Ella Franklin (Poolesville, Md / Poolesville) a layup that opened the second quarter. Snow hit back-to-back threes followed by free throws from Dennin that cut the Cardinal lead to one. Walcott responded with a layup that made the score 24-21 Cardinals with over five minutes to play. From the 3:25 mark until the end of the quarter, the Knights went on a 9-2 run as they took the lead into halftime 34-29.
Walcott opened the third with a made free throw to which the Knights responded with six straight points that made the score 39-30 with less than seven minutes to play. Smith ended the run with a jumper before Hintz responded with a layup that extended the lead to nine again. After a three from Couture and a layup from Brousseau to end the third, the Cardinals cut the lead to four as the third period ended 47-43.
Kristin Suydam made a three followed by an and one layup from Greek. Both teams exchanged buckets multiple times as Snow made a layup, Greek a three, Brianna Beebe a layup, and Wilson a three that made the score 54-52 with less than eight minutes to play. At the 3:27 mark, the Knights got a layup from Hintz that made the score 60-53 and extended their lead to seven. The Cardinals only scored six more points as they fell 67-58.
