WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's basketball produced an all-time comeback on Friday night, overcoming a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit to oust No. 9 Scranton in overtime.
No. 13 Catholic was staring down the barrel of defeat as it trailed by 14 with 4:44 remaining in the game before a three from Keegan Douglas and back-to-back contested layups by Anna Scoblick sparked the Cardinal comeback. Matt Donohue's team closed regulation on a 23-10 run to force overtime.
The Cardinals still had plenty of work to do in the final two minutes of regulation, trailing by nine before Kerry Flaherty hit a three with 1:40 remaining to cut the deficit to six. Flaherty then grabbed a steal off the inbound and Douglas was fouled, earning two free throws which she converted to cut the lead to 66-62.
After a successful defensive possession, Flaherty canned another three to cut the Royal lead to one with a minute remaining. Catholic then cooked up the defense, causing Scranton major problems on the subsequent inbound and forcing Royal coach Ben O'Brien to burn both of his final two timeouts.
Scranton was finally able to get the ball in and earned a trip to the free-throw line where Kaeli Romanowski converted both to push the Royal advantage to three. Sarah White then answered with a tough pull-up jump with 29 seconds remaining to pull back within one. The Cardinals nearly forced a turnover on the inbound but Romanowski was fouled again with 18 seconds remaining and again canned both to restore Scranton's three-point advantage.
Following coach Donohue's final timeout, the Cardinals had one opportunity to tie the game. With time winding down, Douglas received the ball at the top of the arc. Dribbling left off a screen, she rose up to swish a game-tying three with just over a second remaining, sending a healthy DuFour Center crowd into raptures.
After Scranton failed to connect on a three-quarter-court heave at the buzzer, the game headed to an extra period in which the Cardinals would not be denied. Carly Mulvaney stepped up big in overtime, scoring the first eight points of the extra frame. She connected from long range on the first possession before sandwiching two free throws with another three pointer.
Catholic led by as many as seven in the extra period but Scranton pulled within two with 17 seconds remaining after a steal and layup by Kaci Kranson. After Douglas went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line, Scranton had two final chances to tie the game.
Kranson missed a three with four seconds remaining but Kate Gorski was able to draw a foul during the fight for the rebound. After missing the first free throw, she was forced to miss the second intentionally in hopes of getting one final look from three. Douglas was able to secure the final board of the contest to secure the massive win.
The first-ever match-up between two top-15 teams on Franny Murray Court lived up to the billing. After Scranton began the game on an 8-0 run, Catholic immediately responded with a 8-2 run of their own and no team led by more than that until Scranton pushed out to the double-digit advantage in the fourth quarter.
All five of Catholic's starters scored in double figures, led by Douglas with career-high 29. The junior transfer earned her way to the free-throw line 13 times, converting on 11 of those attempts while also adding three assists and four rebounds, including the final board to seal the victory.
Scranton entered the contest ranked third in the country in rebound margin but the Cardinals were able to overcome Scranton's strong play on the glass. Catholic was able to come away victorious despite Scranton out-rebounding Catholic 57-37 and Romanowski dropping a staggering 38 points to set a new career-high mark.
Entering the contest Catholic had dropped six straight against its rivals and nine of its last 10. With the victory, the Cardinals remain undefeated and equal their best start to a season in over a decade, matching the 2012-13 at 14-0.
Catholic will now enter its date with Juniata on Sunday at the Palestra at 7-0 in Landmark Conference play. Tip-off at the historic venue is slated for 2:30 p.m.
