Scots Fall to Berea 83-54

Huskey Picks up Third Double-Double of the Season

MARYVILLE – Maryville (3-7, 1-2 CCS) trailed by just seven points at halftime but was unable to keep up with the tough Berea (11-2, 4-0 CC) offense in the final 20 minutes of play, falling to the Mountaineers 83-54 Tuesday night at the Cooper Athletic Center.
 
The Scots trailed just 36-29 at the half, even outscoring the defending CCS champions 18-16 in the second quarter. The Mountaineers came out of the gates hot in the second half, starting the third period on a 24-7 run that was capped off by a Drea Satori jumper to put Berea ahead 60-26 with 3:34 remaining.
 
When time ran out in the third quarter, Berea had outscored the Scots 28-12 and had taken a 64-41 lead. The Scots were able to slow the Mountaineers offense a bit in the final 10 minutes of play, allowing 19 points in the fourth while scoring 13 of their own.
 
For Maryville, Emma Huskey led the way offensively, picking up a team-high 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to secure her third double-double of the season. She also led the Scots on the defensive end of the court with a season-high two blocks.
 
Olivia Cathers was the other Scot to record double figures in the contest, picking up 10 points on 4-of-9 from the field. This marks the sophomore's second double-digit outing of the season.
 
MC won the rebound battle in the contest, grabbing 40 boards to Berea's 38. Maryville's advantage came primarily on the offense glass, outrebounding the Mountaineers 16-11 on offense. Courtney Carruthers led the Scots on that front, with all four of her rebounds in the game being of the offensive variety.
 
Berea's offense was unstoppable for much of the contest, with the Mountaineers shooting 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field. During their impressive stretch in the third quarter, they shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17).
 
Five players scored in double figures for Berea, led by 20 from Lynkaylah James, who also secured 10 rebounds to pick up her seventh double-double of the season.
 
The Scots are back on the road this weekend for two more conference showdowns. They face Huntingdon at 5 p.m. Central on Friday and then on Saturday, they'll take on LaGrange. Tipoff for Saturday's contest is set for 2 p.m.
