NEW YORK CITY - Berry Women's Basketball increased their win column to six with their defeat over Williams in the final day of their Holiday classic, 65-57.
A twenty-point first period for the Vikings lifted them to an early victory over the Ephs. At the tip, Williams took the lead until Ellie Gearing and Elly Callihan took turns on Vikings buckets as they captured a lead that was never given up again. The 16-0 run dialed in leading scorer Kenadie Lee and Karlee Armstrong and Sylvia Kahoro tagged in on the scoring efforts as they held off the Ephs defensively and held them to two points in the remaining five minutes of the first quarter.
Kahoro's three jump started the second period and gave the Vikings their biggest lead of the game at 15-points (23-8). Both teams battled throughout the quarter, but no change came within the scoring margin with Berry up 14 at halftime (35-21).
Sitting in a good spot the Vikings refused to take their foot off the gas when ringleader, Lee, hit two triples to begin the second half and claim a new lead of 22-points (43-21). Gearing began her route to snatching ten rebounds to give her team a sense of security in possessing the ball.
At the end of the fourth, Berry was up 45-33 and had ten minutes of tough basketball ahead.
The Ephs came to life in the fourth once Lee made her fourth triple. With a 17-point lead, the Vikings relaxed and allowed Williams to chisel away and bring the game within a possession with 1:47 remaining. However, six made free-throws for the Vikings saved the day as Williams was forced to foul, but Berry held on and earned a road win in the Empire State.
The Vikings' next action will be after the Holiday when they return to Mount Berry for a home game against Guilford on December 30 at 3:00 PM ET.
