ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter and downed Brooklyn College 65-46 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Sandy DeWolf McCormack Memorial Holiday Tournament. It was the Golden Flyers ninth-straight win to push their record to 10-1 overall. The nine wins in a row marks the most since 1995-96 when the Golden Flyers won 10 games in a row, before losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
For the third straight game, Molly Benetti was the leading scorer for the Golden Flyers with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Olivia Dobrovosky notched her second double-double of the year with 12 points on 5-for-12 from the floor, while adding a game-high 10 rebounds. She also had three steals.
Both squads shot the ball well in the opening half with Nazareth connecting on 50 percent (15-for-30) and the Bulldogs on 51.9 percent (14-for-27). Brooklyn was able to stay close by hitting 7-for-11 from 3-point range.
Madilann Johnson connected on 2-of-3 from downtown and led Nazareth with 10 points at the break. She was one of four Golden Flyers to score in double figures for the game as they led 42-35 at halftime.
It was a slow second half, with Nazareth outscoring Brooklyn 23-11. Only fifteen points total were scored in the third with Naz scoring eight, to the Bulldogs seven.
With the score at 48-42 late in the third, Nazareth used a 9-0 run to end the quarter and begin the fourth to seize control of the game at 57-42. The stingy Golden Flyer defense limited Brooklyn to just four points in the fourth.
Kiara Anglin poured in 10 points and nine boards. Sarina McDowell contributed eight points, while Leah Fusilli notched seven points and five boards.
Nazareth returns to action on Friday, January 5 traveling to Elmira for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
About Sandy DeWolf McCormack - Nazareth University hosts a heartfelt basketball tournament in honor of the late Sandy DeWolf McCormack, a beloved Naz Hoops alum. Sandy's legacy at Nazareth was marked by a remarkable four-year career, during which she emerged as a standout player, ultimately earning her a well-deserved spot in the Nazareth Hall of Fame in 1999.
With 1,311 points to her name, Sandy still holds a place in the top 10 across various statistical categories, including games played, rebounds, field goals made, free throws made, and blocks. As a four-year starter, she played an integral role in guiding the Golden Flyers to three NCAA Tournament appearances and an impressive 82-29 record.
Tragically, Sandy succumbed to cancer in 2020 after displaying incredible courage throughout her battle. Despite her passing, Sandy's spirit lives on in this tournament, dedicated to her memory as a gesture of gratitude for her unwavering support of the Nazareth Women's Basketball Program.
The event serves as both a tribute to a remarkable athlete and overall person and a celebration of the enduring impact Sandy had on the Nazareth University community.
