Millikin Falls in Battle of Ranked Teams

The #13 ranked Millikin women's basketball team dropped a road contest at 12th ranked Hope College 77-69 on December 20 in Holland, Michigan.

Millikin falls to 9-2 on the season while Hope improves to 10-1.

 

Millikin started the game strong pushing out to a six-point advantage three different times in the first quarter. Hope hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 19-19 at the end of the first quarter. The Flying Dutch took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring Millikin 24-13 to build a 43-32 lead at halftime. Millikin used its defensive pressure to stay close in the second half outscoring Hope in each the third and fourth quarters.

 

One of the key factors in the game was three-point shooting with Hope hitting 10-22 (45.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Millikin entered the week leading NCAA Division III in three-point field goal percentage at 42.6 percent. However, against Hope Millikin struggled from long range making only 4-17 (23.5 percent). Millikin shot 45 percent (29-65) from the field while Hope made 26-61 (43 percent).

 

Senior Sophie Darden led Millikin with her sixth double double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Elyce Knudsen had 19 points followed by Bailey Coffman with 12. Coffman had six rebounds and four assists. Matayia Tellis added nine points.

 

Sydney Vis led Hope with 18 points including three three-pointers. Karsen Karlblom also hit three from beyond the arc for 13 points.

 

After some time off for Christmas, Millikin will travel to Central College on New Year's Eve.
