Captains Tie NCAA Record for Consecutive Road Wins as Three-Point Barrage Lifts No. 3 CNU Women's Basketball Over Stevenson, 94-58

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Utilizing a dominant effort from beyond the arc, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team rushed out to a big lead and never looked back on Saturday evening as the Captains downed Stevenson University (3-5) by a final score of 94-58. CNU knocked down 14 triples while capturing the team's 35th consecutive road win, matching an NCAA Division III women's basketball record.

The 14 made three-pointers ties a season high and is tied for the sixth most ever in a single game in program history. It fell just two makes shy of the program record set in 2019 against Methodist. In one of the finest shooting performances of the season, the Captains knocked down 45.2 percent from long range (14-31) while shooting 47.1 percent from the field overall (33-70).

Boasting the longest active winning streaks both as the home team (44) and visitors (35), the win moved Christopher Newport to the top of the record books for consecutive road wins. The 35-straight wins matches Amherst College's all-time record set between 2015-18; the Captains will have a chance to break the record in their next road game at Stevens on December 30.

With the victory, the Captains' head coach, Bill Broderick, also made history of his own by joining Carolyn Hunter at the top of the career victories list for a CNU head coach. With his 265th career victory, Broderick draws even with Hunter and will have his first opportunity to become the winningest coach in program history in CNU's next game, scheduled for Tuesday, December 19 against Grove City College.

After a back-and-forth start early in the first quarter, the Captains took control behind the three-ball, getting three consecutive makes from beyond the arc to take the lead for good. Camille Malagar tickled the twine first before Hailey Kellogg snapped in a pair to give CNU a 19-12 advantage with 3:54 left in the opening period.

The early triples would shift momentum for the Captains, who would then turn in a 30-point second quarter including 22 points off of turnovers. Checking into the game right as the quarters changed, fifth-year senior Katy Rader made her season debut for the Captains and immediately made an impact on both ends of the floor. After a breakout senior season a year ago, Rader was sidelined following a knee injury in the Sweet 16 of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Making her first appearance since, Rader snagged a steal on her first defensive possession, kicked a pass out to Gabbi San Diego, who returned the favor on the fast break and the veteran calmly buried a bomb from long range to give CNU its first double-digit lead of the game, 30-19.

The second quarter was where CNU did the bulk of its damage, outscoring the home team, 30-9, while forcing 15 turnovers and shooting 50 percent from the floor. Rader had another trey to lead the way while Mia Wilson, Malagar, and McKenna Snively each added one triple in the quarter. Additionally, Hannah Kaloi was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and led the way with seven points in the period.

The defense was dominant, holding the Mustangs to just four field goal attempts (2-4). Behind that performance, CNU carried a 55-26 lead into the locker room while shooting over 51 percent (19-37). The Captains hit nine of the team's fourteen three-pointers in the first half.

CNU would keep their foot on the gas in the second half, scoring another 39 points to finish the game with a season-best 94 points in the game. Leading the way was sophomore McKenna Snively, who scored a season-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting including four triples. Snively added three rebounds and did her damage in just 18 minutes of floor time. Also finishing in double figures was Kaloi, who added 11 points and a team-high five rebounds in the game.

Rader headlined a quartet of Captains with eight points in her debut, joined by Caitlin Crump, Kellogg, and Malagar. Kellogg also had a team-high five assists as Christopher Newport dished 19 assists on 33 made field goals in the game.

Christopher Newport improves to 10-0 on the season which marks the third straight season the Captains have gotten to double digits in the win column without a loss on its ledger.

CNU will return to action in the Music City Classic hosted at Welch College in Gallatin, Tenn. next week. The Captains will face Grove City College on Tuesday, December 19 and No. 17 Whitman College on Wednesday, December 20.
