Hornets End the Reign of the Royals for Second Straight Win

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball was back on the floor Wednesday evening for a conference matchup with Eastern Mennonite.  The Hornets (5-2, 4-0) came away with the 74-46 win over the Royals (3-4, 0-2) at home in front of the Hornet faithful.  Shawnise Campbell led all scorers with 18 points and 10 boards for the double-double.  Maddie Kimble added 14 points and eight assists, while Emily Williams contributed with 13 points and eight rebounds of her own.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Shenandoah quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a jumper by Emily Williams, but that lead was short-lived as the Royals came down the court and answered with a three to take the lead.  A Hornet turnover led to another Royals basket, before scoring another layup and hitting a free throw to increase the lead to 8-4, their biggest lead.  But after that it was all Hornets for the rest of the game, as Shenandoah would end the quarter on a 12-6 run.  Emily Williams would convert her two free throws to pull the game level at 8, before Gabby Krystofiak would nail a three to give the Hornets a 16-13, and never look back in the game.

In the Second quarter, the Hornets absolutely dominated the Royals outscoring the opposition 24-12 in the half to take a 40-26 lead into the break.  The combination of Maddie Kimble and Shawnise Campbell was too much to handle, as the duo combined for the first 10 Hornet points of the stanza.  The Hornets could not be stopped in the second shooting 9-15 from the floor (60%) and a blistering 5-7 from deep (71%).  Kayla Maxson and Maggie Rooklin would add two more triples before Emily Williams' three would give the Hornets their biggest lead of the game at 14.

After the break, the Hornets continued to shoot well and defend against the Royals' offense.  EMU did not have an answer for Shawnise Campbell as the junior dominated the paint down low grabbing boards and scoring buckets.  Zoe Smith would enter the game and quickly get onto the score sheet with a jumper to give Shenandoah their biggest lead of the game at 51-34.  The Hornet defense held the Royals to no baskets for the final 3:06 of the period.  Shawnise Campbell would add the final basket of the period, and Shenandoah would take a 21-point lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth, EMU could not slow down the Hornets as the Shenandoah lead continued to balloon.  A three from Terese Greene, followed by an Emily Williams layup, pushed the lead to 26.  Jessica Littlejohn would hit a jumper in the paint, as the Hornets were comfortably up by 32 with 1:50 on the clock.  Two free throws from Kiersten Hostetter pushed the lead back to 32, but the Royals were able to score a putback basket as the clock expired and the Hornets would win by a final score of 76-46.

The Hornet defense was fantastic.  Each quarter Shenandoah held EMU to fewer points.  If it were not for that layup as time expired, that trend would have continued.
