Conn College shoots past JWU in second half

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team overpowered Johnson & Wales University in the third quarter en route to a 63-48 victory in its home opener on Wednesday night at Luce Field House.

The Camels, who trailed 25-19 at intermission, came out white hot to start the second half. Conn shot 10-for-16 from the floor—including 6-for-10 from deep—to outscore the Wildcats 28-9 in the period.
Aislinn McMahon (Andover, Mass.) netted all eight of her points in the third quarter to help jump start the offense. Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) led the Camels with 10 points while Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) and Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) chipped in nine and eight, respectively.

Johnson & Wales took advantage of a slow start to jump on Conn in the opening half. The Wildcats led 11-6 after the first quarter, and Alexa Lora hit three triples and supplied nine points in the second to keep the visitors in front. The Camels, who shot just 25 percent in the half, trailed by six at the break.

The Camels shot their way into the lead in the second half behind six three-pointers in the third quarter. Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) and Hunter provided threes on back-to-back possessions to open the half, tying the score at 25-25 before spectators were settled back into their seats.

Conn later used a 16-2 run to take control of the game, with McMahon scoring all eight of her points to lead the charge. After seeing the floor sparingly in the first half, she played the entire third quarter and shot 3-for-4 with a pair of threes to rally the Camels.

Leading 47-34 after three, the Camels opened the fourth quarter with nine straight points to put the game out of reach. Conn extended the lead to as many as 24 in the final minutes.

Sarah Wisniewski scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the second half to pace JWU. Lora finished with 11 points to round out the Wildcats in double figures.

Conn (2-4 overall) will next play at Salve Regina University on Saturday, December 2 at 1:00 p.m.
