WBB: Panthers stung by VTSU Lyndon

 

PLYMOUTH, N.H. The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to the Vermont State University Lyndon Hornets, 60-57, in a non-conference game in Foley Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

The Hornets buried six three pointers in the first quarter and led by as many as 18 in the first half as the game seemed like it was going to be a runaway.  Plymouth State came all the way from behind to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but VTSU knocked down two more buckets from distance to put the game away in the closing minutes of the contest.

Graduate student Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, N.H.) led the Panthers with 17 points, while senior Sabrina Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.) recorded 13 points of her own. Senior Lauren Keller (Fort Morgan, Colo.) scored nine points for Plymouth State in the losing effort.

Plymouth State falls to 3-2, while VTSU Lyndon improves to 4-2 on the season.

How it Happened:

  • The Hornets opened with three straight three-pointers to take an early 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
  • A 10-3 run to close out the first extended the VTSU Lyndon advantage to 22-10.
  • The Hornets continued to pour in buckets from distance, draining two more three-pointers to take a 30-12 lead midway through the second quarter.
  • Plymouth State kept the Hornets from scoring another field goal in the half as the Panthers clawed back to make it a 33-23 game.
  • The Panthers started the third quarter on a 14-0 run to take its first lead since the opening bucket, 37-33, with 4:32 on clock.
  • VTSU Lyndon knocked down two free throws to close out third quarter as the Panthers led 42-40 after three.
  • The Hornets pulled in front again, 48-45, with 6:46 left to play.
  • Plymouth State responded immediately, draining three straight buckets to go up 51-48 as clock wound down and tension grew.
  • VTSU Lyndon found the long ball again, knocking down back-to-back threes to take the lead 56-53 with 2:26 to go.
  • With eight seconds on the clock and down three points, the Panthers had the final possession of the game to attempt to put it into overtime but came up short in the end as the Hornets were able to secure the win.

By the Numbers:

  • PSU went 22-of-65 (33.8%) from the floor, and 4-of-20 (20.0%) from three.
  • The Hornets brought down 38 rebounds to Plymouth State's 35.
  • Plymouth State recorded 11 offensive rebounds to the Hornets' three.
  • Bench points were in the Hornets' favor, 18-12.
  • Points in the paint went to Plymouth State, 28-14.
  • The Panthers had 17 steals in the contest, the most in a game since the 2021-22 season.
  • PSU had won each of the last three meetings between the two teams.
  • The Panthers hold a 14-6 record in the overall head-to-head dating back to 1987.
