Mid-Game Effort Establishes Lead for Mustangs Over Royals

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Mustangs concluded their appearance in the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off tournament with a win in the consolation game Saturday afternoon against the Eastern Mennonite Royals, who lost to the McDaniel College Green Terror last evening. The Mustangs finished today on top 76-57.
 
The Mustangs wasted no time once again getting on the board, with four points in the first minute. A close battle ensued as the Royals tied the Mustangs 6-6 with 7:28 remaining off a free throw series. Temporarily losing an early lead, the Mustangs tied it again 11-11 following free throws from first-year guard Amoni Taylor and a three-pointer from first-year guard Elia Richardson. The Mustangs maintained the lead, ending the opening period 17-16.
 
Junior guard Jaidyn Harris opened the second quarter with a layup 50 seconds into play. A minute later, sophomore forward Tessa Boswell followed suit with a jumper. The Mustangs gained a 10-point lead following two three-pointers from junior guard Emori Jeselskis at 4:16 remaining but the Royals tied the game 32-32 with 1:01 remaining. The Mustangs went into halftime behind, 34-32.
 
The third quarter saw the Mustangs tie the game again with 3:44 remaining despite the Royals' efforts. Stevenson took the lead in a free throw series from Harris with 3:44 remaining. Breaking 50 points, the Mustangs ended the quarter on top 51-47 with a jumper from first-year center Amanda Nwankwo with three seconds remaining.
 
Boswell wasted no time adding a three-pointer in the final quarter 48 seconds into play. With the gap tightening at seven minutes remaining, the Mustangs found four more opportunities, including another three-pointer from Boswell with 5:07 remaining. Taylor brought the team to 70 points  and scored once more with 20 seconds remaining, bringing the final score to 76-57.
 
Four Mustangs scored 10+ points, with Boswell scoring 19 on the afternoon, going 3/6 on three pointers and 7/10 on field goals. She also made two steals. Richardson netted 13 points, while Erin Dixon added 12. On rebounds, three Mustangs recorded four defensive rebounds each from Jeselskis, Nwankwo, and junior forward Stephenae Lawrence. Lawrence also added two blocks.
 
The Mustangs make their first home appearance this season on Tuesday, November 14 against the Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators at 7 p.m. in Owings Mills gymnasium.
