Wolves Downed by Blue Devils 84-65

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost to Fredonia State 84-65 on Saturday to close out the 58 Main BBQ & Brew Tip-off Classic at SUNY Brockport.

Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) led Keuka College (1-4, 0-0 Empire 8) with 15 points and Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) added 10 points for the Wolves. Katie Deatherage (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Marcus Whitman) led Keuka College with a career-high 13 rebounds.

Fredonia State 84 vs. Keuka College 65

Keuka College took an early 6-5 lead over the Blue Devils with Ellen Lavonas (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) scoring four for the six for the Wolves. Keuka later extended their lead to 11-8 on a three by Sophia Babcock (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego). Fredonia recovered and made a layup with 14 seconds left to lead 19-17 after the first.

The Blue Devils extended their lead to six to start the second quarter until Caiden Crego (Lyons, N.Y. / Lyons) drove for a layup. The Wolves cut the lead down to three following a Sydney Brown three, but the Blue Devils answered and widened their lead. Fredonia pushed their lead to 10 and led 41-31 at the half.

Following trading baskets to start, Fredonia went on a 14-0 run to take control of the game. Janea Hamilton-Brown (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) stopped the streak with a free throw, but Fredonia answered with 10 more points. After hitting five threes in the first half, Fredonia made five in the third quarter on their way to 31 points in the frame. Brown made a late three for the Wolves but Fredonia took a 72-44 lead into the final quarter.

Brown kept it going, hitting another three for the first basket of the fourth, but the Blue Devils remained in control. A late, personal 6-0 run by Bri Galan (Washington Heights, N.Y. / Washington Heights) cut the lead under 20, but Fredonia saw it out for an 84-65 victory.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves are now 8-5 all-time against Fredonia State. It was the first meeting between the Wolves and the Blue Devils in over 30 years
  • Sydney Brown knocked down three threes for the Wolves. She has now attempted the sixth-most in program history
  • Brown was also named to the All-Tournament Team for the 58 Main BBQ & Brew Tip-off Classic
  • 13 rebounds by Deatherage was a career-high for the junior and most by any Wolf this season
  • The six points by Galan is a season-high for the junior

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves have some time off before their next contest to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. Keuka College will return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 29 as the Wolves take on Division I Colgate University. It will be the fifth all-time meeting between the Wolves and the Raiders, but the previous four meetings happened in the 1970s.
