How it Happened:

  • The majority of the first quarter was both teams trading baskets, Southern Virginia scored the first three points from the charity strike. Randolph-Macon answered the bell as Jane Elkins (Annandele, Bishop Ireton) knocked down back-to-back shots to give the Yellow Jackets its first lead at 4-3.
  • Ruth Kempler showed off her scoring prowess with back-to-back lay-ups to pump the Knights lead back to three at 7-4. Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) found her touch from behind the arc, knocking down two straight shots to swing the lead back to RMC 10-9 with 3:40 left. Both teams were battling the final three minutes to end the first quarter 16-16.
  • Southern Virginia started the second quarter on a 9-0 three minute run, capped off by a Maria Savvun three-pointer to stretch out the lead 25-18.
  • The Lemon and Black struggled offensively in the quarter, Miller led the way with three points, as she shot 3-for-5 from the three point line totalling nine in the first half.
  • The Knights ended the quarter with momentum, going on a 7-1 run that saw Abigail Snyder account for five of the seven, taking a 34-24 lead into the halftime break.
  • Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) sparked the Yellow Jackets offense with six unanswered points to pull within six at 36-30 with 7:50 left in the third.
  • Miller knocked down a deep three pointer to cut the Southern Virginia lead to 38-37 to cap off a 13-4 run by RMC that lasted the first five minutes of the third quarter.
  • The Knights kept answering the bell and went on a 12-3 run to finish the third with a 50-40 lead. Kempler was responsible for six of the points on the run, which ran her total to 19 points.
  • Kagey led the way for Randolph-Macon in the fourth quarter with eight points, but the Knights used that late third quarter run as a cushion to salt away a 68-58 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
