No. 21 and new-look Hope rolls past Marian in opener

A multi-state alliance propelled a new-look Hope College women's basketball team to a season-opening victory on Thursday at home.

With student-athletes from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Oregon contributing, the Flying Dutch overcame an early deficit to roll past Marian University (Wis.), 90-48, at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Five new starters took the court for Hope. Four freshmen made their debuts for the nationally-ranked Flying Dutch, too.

Head coach Brian Morehouse had a lot to be pleased about afterward.

"First, I want to be calling out our bench. They were unbelievable," Morehouse said. "From having a couple of freshmen in that group to some people who haven't hit the floor a lot, I thought they played hard on the defensive end. I thought they rebounded really well and they played with awesome poise.

"Our starters, we haven't been able to put them together much [due to injury]. Then, [starting center Raven Jemison] got two quick fouls, two tough ones," Morehouse said. "You look down at our bench and who's leading the whole group, cheering people on the court? Raven. She was a leader and an energizer."

After falling behind 9-4 2 ½ minutes into the game, the Flying Dutch came to life and outscored Marian by a 39-20 margin for a 43-29 halftime lead.

Hope then ran away with the non-league victory by outscoring Marian by a 24-6 margin during the third quarter.

The Flying Dutch's bench outscored Marian by a 54-3 margin for the game.

Freshman guard Chloe Brunsburg (Chaska, Minnesota / Southwest Christian) scored a team-high 16 points off the bench while also grabbing eight rebounds in 13 minutes.

Junior guard Oliva Bellows (Lake City, Michigan / Lake City) chipped in 15 minutes in 17 minutes off the bench.

Sophomore guard/forward Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) also finished in double figures with 11 points.

Thirteen different student-athletes scored points for Hope. The Flying Dutch committed only eight turnovers.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Marian will face Wisconsin-Platteville on Friday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. at Holland Civic Center.

Against Hope, Marian was led by a double-double from guard Kiara Williams of a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds.
