Mustangs Gain Second-Half Lead, Drop Late to Eagles, 62-60

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's basketball (7-18, 6-10 in the MAC) hoped for a win against the Eastern University Eagles (5-19, 3-13), celebrating their five seniors: guards Morgan Pennick and Aysia Ferguson; and forwards Morgan DeBearyEllie Boswell, and Maleah Smith,  in Owings Mills gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
 
Sophomore guard Laci Johnson set a career-high 29 points on the afternoon, adding five rebounds and three assists to her record. The sophomore scored six successful three-pointers out of 16 attempted for a .429 percentage on the afternoon. Smith also had a strong performance, scoring 11 points and eight total rebounds, while first year forward Tessa Boswell continued to be an offensive force, notching 10 points and three steals.
 
FIRST QUARTER
Boswell gave the Mustangs an early lead in the opening period with a three pointer, her first of two. The Eagles gained traction before the Mustangs tied them with 2:45 remaining off a Tessa Boswell layup. With multiple successful free throws, the Eagles finished the opening period on top 13-8 following a three-pointer from Johnson with just over a minute remaining.
 
SECOND QUARTER
After the Eagles scored two more points off free throws, Johnson sunk another three-pointer just over two minutes into play. Smith helped to tighten the gap minutes later, bringing the game to a two-point 15-13 match up, but the Eagles notched their first three-pointer of the afternoon just seconds later. A second successful basket followed with 5:08 remaining. Answering Eastern's offense, Johnson scored two more three-pointers, bringing the game back within a two-point margin. She later tied the game again off a free throw series. Action was matched between the two team, but the Eagles ended the half on top by one point, 26-25.
 
THIRD QUARTER
Stevenson's Johnson and Smith tightened the gap established by the Eagles early in the third period. Eastern brought the game to another tie with 6:12 remaining off a series of free throws. Johnson secured the lead 30 seconds later with another three-pointer. The Mustangs remained on top through the end of the period, when an Eagles' three pointer brought the score to 45-43 in the Mustangs' favor.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
In the final period, the Mustangs had consistent scoring, hitting the 60-point mark with 1:42 remaining. Tying the game one last time, the Eagles had their final chance at the net, sinking one last layup to secure the lead with just 14 seconds remaining, resulting in the 62-60 final decision.



The Mustangs conclude their 2022-23 campaign 7-18 overall and 6-10 in conference play. The Eagles also conclude their winter season 5-19 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
