NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team fell short in its Skyline Conference game against Manhattanville College, 77-64, at ARC Arena on Sunday evening.
YU's Quest for the Skyline Playoffs: The magic number for the Maccabees (10-10, 7-9 Skyline) to clinch a berth in the Skyline Conference Championships remains at one. If Yeshiva can win one of its two remaining regular season games, then they are in the conference postseason.
Historic Accomplishment: Senior guard Yuval Nitzan scored a team-high 14 points. She now moves into second place on the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball Program's All-Time Career Scoring List with 1,147 career points, surpassing YU Athletics Hall of Famer Daniela Epstein ('03) who scored 1,134 career points. Nitzan was one point behind Epstein entering the game.
Nitzan tied and then moved into sole possession of second place with back-to-back free throws with 6:03 left in the first half.
The Game: Manhattanville (18-3, 14-2 Skyline) led the game from wire-to-wire. The Maccabees fell behind by 14 in the early stages of the third quarter, but junior guard Shai Rahamim buried a triple and then hit a pair of free throws to pull YU to within single digits, at 37-28, less than two minutes into the second half.
The Valiants built its lead to 15 a few times during the third stanza, but Yeshiva would not go down without a fight. With YU down by 14, junior guard Abigail Koenig scored the quarter's final four points, capped off by a buzzer-beating layup to shrink the Valiants' lead to 56-46 after 30 minutes of play.
However, Manhattanville went up by as many as 19 during the fourth quarter. YU did inch closer towards the end, but it would not be enough as the Valiants went on to win the conference contest, 77-64.
For Yeshiva: Nitzan also had six assists, five rebounds, two steals, and a block. Rahamim generated 13 points, five assists, three steals, and two boards. Junior guard Daniella Bessler netted 13 points, brought down seven rebounds, and forced two steals.
Senior forward Daniella Rothman added 10 points and four rebounds. Koenig scored eight points, while freshman forward Mia Denti recorded three points and five rebounds.
For Manhattanville: Junior guard Jamison Agostino led all players with 17 points. Senior forward Juliana Kascic had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while dishing out six assists and forcing two steals.
Up Next: Yeshiva will look to secure a berth in the Skyline Conference Championships on Tuesday evening when the Maccabees take on the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's University Long Island. Tipoff at Nat Holman Gymnasium, on the campus of The City College of New York, is set for 6:30 p.m.
