Cortland Gets Off to Quick Start in 81-44 Rout of Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland took a 27-6 lead after one quarter and was never threatened in an 81-44, wire-to-wire win over visiting Plattsburgh in SUNYAC women's basketball action.
 
Cortland won for the ninth time in its last 10 outings and is now 17-3 overall and 12-1 in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons remain in second place in the conference behind New Paltz (12-0). Cortland will host third-place Oneonta on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and New Paltz Saturday at 2 p.m. to close out the home portion of its regular-season schedule.
 
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) led a balance Cortland attack with 13 points, five rebounds and four steals. She made 3-of-4 3-pointers and was 5-for-9 overall. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) finished with 11 points and four steals. Morano scored all 11 of her points and Malone scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half.
 
Sarah Tully (East Aurora) finished with nine points and four assists and Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) totaled eight points, eight rebounds and five assists. Fiona Mullen (Orangeburg/Tappan Zee), in the first start of her Red Dragon career, scored five points and dished out four assists.
 
Mya Smith and Hannah Ruberto led Plattsburgh (6-13, 2-10 SUNYAC) with 11 points apiece. Smith also registered three assists and Bri Brousseau grabbed six rebounds. Kortney McCarthy added nine points and three steals.
 
Cortland made a season-high 13 3-pointers, two shy of matching the school single-game record. The Red Dragons shot 42 percent from the arc and 46 percent overall. Cortland made 8-of-13 3-pointers in the first quarter alone, including three by Morano and two by Malone. Plattsburgh finished at 38 percent shooting overall and 27 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range.
