Travers Hot 3-Point Shooting Helps Cortland Defeat Potsdam, 75-50

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) made a career-high six 3-pointers and led four Cortland double-figure scorers with 20 points as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Potsdam, 75-50, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.
 
Cortland improved to 16-3 overall and 11-1 in the conference, one half game behind leader New Paltz (11-0). Potsdam fell to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in the league.
 
Travers made all five of her 3-point attempts in the first half and had 15 points at the break to help Cortland take a 44-22 halftime lead. The Red Dragons never trailed and outscored the Bears by identical 22-11 margins in each of the first two quarters. Cortland led by as many as 29 points in the third quarter and held a lead of at least 18 points the entire fourth quarter.
 
Travers finished 6-of-8 from the 3-point arc and 7-of-11 overall from the floor. She also led the hosts with three steals. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) made 5-of-8 shots and ended with 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) finished with 11 points, three assists and a team-high eight rebounds and Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) totaled 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.
 
Also for the Red Dragons, Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench and Stef Gera (Auburn) had five points and three assists in 12 minutes.
 
Jakia Howard scored 15 points and Xy'El Bradford had 12 points and two blocks for Potsdam.
 
Both teams shot 39 percent from the field, but Cortland took 24 more shots (and made nine more field goals) than the Bears behind the strength of 27 offensive rebounds and 16 Potsdam turnovers. Cortland held a 20-10 advantage in second-chance points and a 21-11 edge in points off turnovers.
 
Cortland hosts Plattsburgh in a SUNYAC contest Saturday at 2 p.m.
