YORK, Pa. – Stevenson women's basketball scored 13 points within the first five minutes of the evening as they toppled the host York College of Pennsylvania Spartans 67-49 on Wednesday evening in Charles Wolf gymnasium.
At the end of the first half, sophomore guards Laci Johnson and Emori Jeselskis topped the Mustangs with 14 and 13 points respectively, ending the night with 16 and 19 points respectively. Johnson also led with four total assists in the first half, ending with one additional on the evening, and first year forward Kalea Wynter notched six total rebounds. Johnson went four for seven on three pointers in the first half, aiding in the aggressive victory for the Mustangs as she ended with a .500 three-point field goal percentage.
FIRST QUARTER
The Mustangs scored 13 points in the first five minutes as Jeselskis sunk three successful three pointers and first year forward Tessa Boswell notched one. The Spartans made two successful free throws off a foul on sophomore forward Stephenae Lawrence. The Mustangs ended the first period making nine more points, ending on top 22-7.
SECOND QUARTER
The second quarter started slower, with Johnson notching a three pointer about three minutes in. She made three successful three-pointers while Jeselskis added one. The Spartans saw their first three pointers of the game, as they notched three successful shots from the arc. Aware of York's push, the Mustangs matched pace. At the half, the Mustangs maintained a consistent lead, ending ahead 37-23.
THIRD QUARTER
The Spartans picked up slightly in the third, scoring 10 total points. The Mustangs managed a lone successful three pointer from Boswell, Wynter notched two successful layups, and first year guard Erin Dixon notched two points as the clock ticked on. The third quarter ended in a 13-point difference, 46-33, as the Mustangs retained their lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Mustangs wasted no time in the final quarter as Johnson made two points in under 30 seconds. Jeselskis hit the 50-point mark for the Mustangs just seconds later. She made one successful three pointer before Lawrence notched two more points for the Mustangs as the minutes dwindled. Dixon brought the Mustangs over the 60-point threshold with a successful free throw pair. First year forward Aliyah Jean-Jacques tallied two points with just under 1:30 remaining. The Spartans made a final push with two three pointers, bringing their total to 49 with 21 seconds remaining. As the cherry on top, first year Mustang forward Sanaa Thorne made a layup with nine seconds remaining. The game between the conference contenders ended in a 67-49 final decision on the night.
UP NEXT
The Mustangs improve to 6-9 overall and 5-1 in conference, while the Spartans fall to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in conference. The Mustangs continue conference play when they travel to Eastern University this Saturday, Jan. 14, for a 1 p.m. tipoff. The Spartans host Widener University, also this Saturday, for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
