BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's basketball team established a double-digit lead in less than eight minutes and never looked back, recording a 91-52 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Nichols College at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7).
The Nor'easters (9-4, 5-1 CCC) reached their season-high point total with 13 of 14 players factoring in the scoring column. Faye Veilleux paced the squad for a second straight outing, tallying 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting in 17 minutes of action. Juliana Tracey added 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, and Keagan Dunbar chipped in with 12 points and eight caroms.
Kaitlyn Santos posted career bests of 10 points and nine boards off the bench. She shared the game high in rebounding, which helped a whopping 67-35 advantage on the glass. UNE also assisted on a season-high 78 percent (25) of its 32 made baskets, and both Grace Boucher and Gabby Soter joined Tracey with five helpers.
The hosts cashed in on 21 Bison turnovers, scoring 23 from those possessions, while registering 26 second-chance points off 25 offensive boards. UNE also limited the visiting team to 25 percent field-goal accuracy in the contest (17-for-68).
Jordyn Franzen got the Nor'easters off to a good start (11-5), with nine points and one assist in less than four minutes. It wasn't long before Tracey netted seven in-a-row to move the spread up to 23-10. UNE knocked down 12-of-18 shots during the 32-point opening period.
Nichols received 17 points, six rebounds, and three blocks from Kiera Fernandes. Abrianna Vazquez tossed in 12 points, and Erin Cann grabbed nine rebounds.
